When my mother got out of the hospital, she went into Island Grove. It is a converted house with a lot of caregivers, but nobody speaks English. I would go to see her at least three times a week, and she broke out in rashes on her hands three different times. Over Thanksgiving, before I went out of town, I specifically sat down with the caregiver and said that she needed to have this lotion put on her hands and feet every day and to make sure they are scrubbing her head in the shower because she has cradle cap. They said, “OK, not a problem.” When my sister came to pick her up the day after Thanksgiving to take her out to lunch, her hand was cracked and bleeding and her hair was caked with stuff. It was ridiculous. When I got back into town a week later, I took her in to get her hair done. They put baby oil on her head to loosen it up, and she lost a patch of hair to get rid of that. If she was sleeping, they didn’t wake her up and tell her that it was time to eat; they just let her sleep. There weren't any activities, just TV. They told me that people played cards and games, but they didn’t do anything. The room had one closet, one dresser, and two beds. It was clean, but the dresser had a broken door. They had wall air conditioners that didn’t work, so during the summer, they had fans. If you had a parent that was bedridden, it would be fine, but if you had an active parent, this is not a good place to put them in.
