At Brookdale Union Hills all the residents were more comingled, and I was afraid that being that my father is so high functional, that if they were to put him in the dining room with a bunch of people that couldn't feed themselves, and I don't mean any disrespect whatsoever, that it would make him very sad. That he would think to himself, "This is what I have to look forward to in my life," and I don't want that for him. They were very friendly and very helpful. Their facilities were xeriscaped, so it's got a lot of rock, and in Arizona there are not a lot of trees. The rooms were not set up to where dad could have a lot of his furniture. It was more of a rectangular-shaped room. The other reason why we didn't choose that one was when you walk out there's a huge sign in front of their building that says Alzheimer's dementia, and I know that would've turned Dad off right away. It's an all Alzheimer's dementia facility. The staff was very helpful and very knowledgeable.

My parents lived here for a number of years...my dad for 3 1/2 and my mother for 6+ years. In fact she has lived there the longest of any resident.
I have found this Brookdale to be a very good place for them. I particularly appreciate the compassion, direction, and skill of the director, Jim; the nurse, Iretta; the activity director, Veronica; and others.
The residents live in "neighborhoods" which makes life more personal They get together daily in the community center with folks from other neighborhoods for music, concerts, activities, movies and more.
The grounds are peaceful and beautiful; the rooms are all private; there are monthly family events; and there is a lovely room available for family parties and get-togethers, which we have made good use of.
My parents have been content here, which means a lot to me. Everything is never perfect, but the compassion shown them along with the terrific leadership has been an important part of that.

The staff was fabulous, and the woman who met with us was very helpful, guided us, and really took time to speak with us. The facility in the main lobby was really lovely, and they also had individual casitas; we did not tour those, but that was a very strong point for us to transition my dad that would have been a good choice. My husband’s has been here before; he has been there to visit a friend of his, and he was very impressed with it. He had eaten in the dining room too.

My mom moved into Brookdale about a year ago, and she’s had the same caregiver since she got there who's very familiar with Alzheimer’s and knows how to approach her. It’s a small community, so she doesn’t get confused with all the different hallways. They have a community center to keep them entertained, and she interacts when she’s up to it. They also have mass.

The reason I didn’t choose Brookdale Peoria Union Hills is they didn’t have a private single room. They only had available space for sharing and they were more expensive. I don’t see my dad sharing, not as Alzheimer's.
I know they have activities. The facility was very pretty with very nice grounds. The interior and some of the furniture was older but you could tell it was well-loved. It could probably do some updating and remodeling but it was clean and the lady that took me around was nice.

This place is aweful the care givers change weekly..have no clue how to handle the patients...are always outside smoking cigarettes & greatly understaffed....Came in many times during my fathers stay and patients were on the floor after falling out of wheelchairs with no care givers in site. Stay away if you love your loved one.

The care givers were very loving and responded positively to my mother's frequent suggestions for personalizing my father's care.
