The Montebello on Academy was nice but a little pricey. It was more like a hospital environment. It had everything my brother needed, even more than I thought. The prices were OK for what they did, and they provided a lot of services. I thought it was a good place.

I stayed at Montebello back in July 2016. I thought they were excellent. I had absolutely no complaints about how I was treated. The food was good; it was above average. It wasn’t as good as the other rehab hospital that I just recently got out from, but it certainly was not what I call usual institutional food. As far as the staff, I was really impressed by how they filled in for each other. If somebody was busy, another person would come and help. The only complaint I had was that the Internet was very spotty and very difficult to use because there were several upper-scale apartment complexes around, so there were a lot of techies that would use it, and so the service was slowed down to none a lot of the time. So that was frustrating, but it had nothing to do with them whatsoever. The other thing for me was that it wasn’t rehab in the extreme. I probably was a little stronger and more capable than most of their residents, so I wasn’t quite challenged as much in my rehab as most people would be. I was physically fit, so my endurance and physical strength was better, and so I wasn’t challenged quite as much by the classes. The grounds and everything was kept impeccably, and the staff always knew where you were even if they weren’t assigned to you. So if a visitor came, they always knew where I was, and it was a very comforting feeling that people knew where I was. They didn’t have to stop and ask somebody else because everybody on my floor section knew where we were at all times, which was outstanding. One of the things they do was they planned events for occasions. So we had things like ice-cream socials, and we had a Hawaiian luau lunch and different activities. They brought in some musicians at one time and did nice things that were extra like that which I really appreciated. They really work hard to let us have as pleasant of an experience as possible.

I had been to The Montebello on Academy as a patient in the rehab. The care, overall, was very good. Sometimes it was awfully hard to get answers when you rang the bell. Other than that, the food was very good, and the people were very nice. I could not complain about anything else at all. The place was quite big. It was nice that you could have independent living upstairs in the apartment part, then you could be on rehab, and further down the hall, you could be in skilled nursing. Overall, it was very nice. I appreciated the people that worked with me and the doctor that saw us at that time. They had a very good therapist in there for rehab.

Right now, my spouse is finishing up his treatment in the skilled nursing section of The Montebello on Academy and probably will be there until the end of August. It’s a very nice nursing home. They also have assisted living and independent-living area. I haven’t had much contact with the staff, but from what I have seen, they seem very caring. The area that he’s in is more like a hospital room -- a little bit bigger -- but it’s very nice and clean.

I had a family member in the skilled nursing facility for a few months. Hands done the worst I have ever seen. Many times I would help other people out that would be sitting in the halls calling for some sort of help. ALWAYS understaffed. Once we moved my family member she is thriving so well she is living at home again after going somewhere else. Really go there around dinner time and walk up and down the halls before placing your loved one in the skilled nursing unit.

"Visiting" this facility is quite different than being hospitalized there. While I believe their "Independent Living" units are fine, the three months of my mother's stay for rehabilitating her leg was a nightmare. Although the food was good and the facility appeared clean, we found this most important section of the facility poorly staffed. Many times we found my mother laying in urine for too long. On many occasions, I found the staff totally non-responsive to calls for help because they were too busy watching TV. When I had time, I began answering calls from the residents just to check on them to see if I could help or alert a staff member. I, too, would not recommend using the in house doctor at this facility.

The Montebello has one of the nicest nursing homes I've seen. The tables in the dining room had real table cloths, and the entire place was well decorated, which really impressed my grandmother. The food was very good, and did not taste "institutional." My grandmother was encouraged to eat all her meals in the dining room, and the staff was good about helping residents to the dining room if they could not make it there on their own. They had several activities during the week, so the residents had something to do other than watch TV. On the days there was an activity, the staff would come by several times to remind my grandmother and ask if she wanted to go. My grandmother particularly liked the hot chocolate in the afternoons. The staff was very friendly and would converse with the residents. When a resident pressed the button for help, someone would come check to see what they needed. If it wasn't urgent (such as a resident wanting to get ready for bed), the staff member would say they would be back. The wait for help (after the initial check) was usually about 20 minutes. The checking and coming back later annoyed my grandmother, but it did allow the staff to prioritize. The few times I was there when my grandmother really needed help, I don't remember waiting. My major complaint with the Montebello was that there were not phones in the rooms. Since my grandmother cannot operate a cell phone, she could only talk on the phone to my aunts and uncles when my mom or I was there. Everything else was about as good as you can expect in a nursing home. Overall, I would recommend the nursing home at the Montebello.
