I am currently at Handmaker Home for the Aging. It's been great. They're constantly reviewing you. When you ask for them, they come right away. They come by and ask you if you want to go to any of the entertainment or events that they have. I have doctors and nurses coming in and out of here. This morning, I've had six people come in for different reasons. You're not left alone. They care about you. There's an area where you can go watch TV. I'm very content with it and I feel they're trying to help me.

The nurse to patient ratio is unacceptable. Very poor management. Dirty rooms and overall dated facility.

My sister-in-law was a resident of Handmaker Home For the Aging. The facilities were wonderful, but the room was average but clean. They had a very nice dining room where families could join, which I thought that was very nice. They did a good job with physical therapy. The staff members were fine and very good at keeping us informed.

Do yourself a favor and don't send your loved ones to Handmaker. That place may look nice, but the nursing care is awful. My dad was ignored when he asked for help, they don't give the pain meds on time, they seem to forget that he can't stand and ask him to do things that are not possible. The list goes on and I am disgusted that nurses would treat a patient this way.

There are not many good places in Tucson for Medicare Adv or Altec places but this has a decent rating - unfortunately if you look at all of the complaints in most nursing homes in Tucson they all have the same problems. Handmaker is one of them. They outsource staffing and all therapies so there is no accountability!! Be careful and monitor everything if you choose this facility!!!

My mom went to Handmaker. Overall, it was good. I actually was able to stay with my mom there the whole time. They provided a cot for me. Initially, we had some issues with the staff just providing my mom pain medications. I felt like they were short-handed. At first, I would tell them my mom needed medication and they were telling me, “Oh, we have reports to get done.” But after that, they were very good. Everything about them was great. The food and the service were good. They were very helpful in getting my mom on hospice. The living facility part was great, also.

My parents are in Handmaker. It has the three levels of care that we are looking for: assisted living; on-site, full-time assistance with nurses; and psychiatric care, which is important to us. The place is very nice and very new at less than five years old. The staff is extremely professional and very attentive. They have medical people that drop in. It is a great facility with several activities planned throughout the day, like crafts, painting, some sports, and a shuttle service that drives the residents to where they need to go. They have a full kitchen staff, so all of the meals are provided. Each apartment has a little kitchenette if they want to do their own cooking.

Mom is in Handmaker Home for the Aging right now. She’s been there about 5 days. It’s a Jewish facility; it’s very nice and very clean. It has good care and they do rehab which is why she is there. The staff is excellent and very responsive. It’s a single room and they share a bathroom with one other individual who’s nearby. They have a small dining room for the residents. It’s off a courtyard so it’s very pretty. They have religious services if people are inclined. It has bingo and a book cart; they do field trips for the long term residents.

Handmaker Home For the Aging is very well-organized. They have a lot of amenities for the residents. They are very attentive to their patients’ needs. It has a very comforting and homey atmosphere. It doesn’t feel cold or institutional at all. The facility is very nice and the rooms are very nice, too. There are no unpleasant odors whatsoever. It smelled very clean and fresh. Overall, it’s a very pleasant facility. Their calendar is full of activities. They have field trips, all sorts of crafts, games, and a lot of on-site activities.

My wife was placed there from an Assisted Living facility and we Myself, and 2 daughters living in Tucson) were initially happy that she was able to get into a Nursing Home with such a good reputation, but after a while I came to realize they were unfriendly, uncooperative with my wife's needs and preferances...then after 2 weeks of my wife's suffering through an apparent head cold/sinus infection and weezing we demanded she go to the ER across the street to TMC, where she underwent testing and immediately admitted with their diagnosis of "Pneumonia"!!! How could this happen in such a supposedly great Nursing Home???

There are a few things I didn't care for at Handmaker Home for the Aging. That place is busy, like going into a busy hospital. They could be understaffed. I had to put it on the real low scale. The staff was OK. They had plenty of activities. They have different groups there. There are games going on. There is a reading session. It's set up really nice. It looks all sanitary and clean. It's an older place. The Tuczon Medical Center is close by. It's so close to everything there for patients.

Don't be fooled by tv ads for this facility. The state of Arizona found many deficiencies. Poorly run, cold atmosphere, unfriendly staff.
