My dad used to be at Harmony at Oakbrooke. I used to think they were really good, but with the incidences that happened around January, not so much. They were bought out and they immediately started firing everybody, so they're short-staffed and not prepared. They don't have the activities that his other place has. They had told us originally that he could go outside because he likes to sit outside, and he couldn't. When he was there from July to December last year, I was happy with the place. Then in January this year, I got a phone call saying my dad has turned violent and he needs to go to the hospital and have an evaluation. The people that they have there right now are very nice. However, they don't have enough, the higher-ups have lost their minds and are firing everybody. So now everybody's leaving, everybody's pulling their parents out. They just went up in their price, it's high, and I don't think the value is very good. I understand that they have to keep his room while he was in the hospital for 5 days, but he wasn't in his room and didn't need any food, and I had to pay $14,500 for January and February. Their meals were good, but they hardly had any activities.

I toured Harmony at Oakbrooke. It was very clean, and the space was very open and vibrant. It's rather new, so that's probably why. I like how welcoming it was. The person who assisted me was really good. She was really nice, and she is very easy to keep in contact with. She gave me her phone number, and I was able to text her when I have questions and stuff. She was great. We actually toured there twice with my family. They really liked it because she was very compassionate. Dining was also really good. I like the food that they had on the menu and how they try to cater to what people like. The dining area was very clean. It looked open like it was in the middle of the community, and I like that. They had a lot of activities. They have ice cream socials. I also like that they have music time, where they're able to listen to music.

Harmony at Oakbrooke is very clean and they try to make things comfortable for the memory care residents. My mom just started going to physical and occupational therapy today. Then they have a garden, a large screen TV where they put movies on, and she's got a nice room. There are some issues for now, like the call buttons are not where they should be or not enough for them in the room, as far as I'm concerned, but like everywhere else, they're short-staffed right now and I understand that.

We toured Harmony at Oakbrooke. It was very impressive. It's a very new facility. It offers a lot of wide range of assistance. I was looking at the memory care unit and they have a place there that is very accommodating for folks like my mom who has dementia. I met some of the staff, they were very friendly. I was impressed with the facility; there's a lot of open space, a lot of activities that are going on. The staff went over some of the menus and the food available, and it looked like a very good meal plan. So just overall, the accommodations looked very good. It's very convenient to where I currently live, too. So, the access was very good in and out, and only five minutes away. So that's a big plus for me having her close by. They had three different rooms: a studio, a one-bedroom, and a two-bedroom. There was no sharing rooms with other folks, it was all individual. I guess that probably increases the price as well, but you've got your own furniture too. This "provide your own furniture," I kind of like in a way, because that makes it a little bit homier, a bit more personal. And so would have her own bed, a little table, or some chest of drawers or things from home, and not just the hotel-type/style furniture. So that was a good touch too. The floor plans are basically the same, but the memory care unit has a staff, I guess, that is situated close by that checks on the folks, and provides an additional level of care and the access, I think, for you to go out and about and around. They keep close tabs on folks in the memory care unit. My mom's not a wanderer, she just can't remember. She is not on prescription drugs, but she has other vitamins and things that she takes, and so she just needs some additional help. The staff was very good, and I appreciated all the information. I thought it was a little expensive, but I expected sort of that. I saw the dining facility, and where it was, and she showed me a menu, but I didn't see any prepared food. It wasn't mealtime, and I didn't see folks in the dining areas. I just saw the dining area. In the memory care unit, they have assistance getting folks down. There were two different dining areas, as I recall, and the memory care unit, it was another area where they had more assistance provided. I liked the layout, the flow, and the access was all very nice. There was a little courtyard downstairs where they have cookouts and outdoor activities, and there was a little kind of a lake pond out back with some chairs where folks could go. It's well thought out and is a nice place.

My dad was not even in Harmony at Oakbrooke before he took a bad fall and was hospitalized. They were very kind and family-oriented. Even the staff seemed very close-knit. They extended kindness towards my father and our family as we were moving him in. His room there was nice and spacious, it was a good setup, and a good option even for the furniture that we had moved in. Because of COVID we weren't allowed to eat with my dad, but he seemed to enjoy the food that was given to him. Their amenities for their assisted living were more accessible for anyone living in memory care.

My mother was in Assisted Living for three years and has now transitioned to Memory Care at Harmony at Oakbrook in Chesapeake, VA. She has lived there for almost 10 months. Harmony at Oakbrook is a fairly new community and the facility itself is impeccable. The staff is outstanding and very friendly. I can tell they have a passion for elder care. We looked at several communities and Harmony at Oakbrook was by far the best. While my mother was in Assisted Living at another community, I never felt as comfortable as I do now with the level of her care and the compassion of her caregivers. From the moment you step in the front door you feel welcome. I can rest easy knowing Mom is being taken care of and that she is living her golden years in a dignified, comforting and compassionate environment. Thank you Oakbrook!
