We visited Brookdale Medical Center Kingsley. The staff all seem to be positive and probably the best you could find. They were all dedicated and were all pretty much long-term workers.
It was more modern. It has the basic fireplace in the regular dining room. I thought that the memory care people didn't care because they can't remember anything, I thought. It was beautiful and it's a modern-style building. They have their own chef. I have to say the food was excellent. I've never had better food anywhere. They offer food choices.
It was smaller in the memory care area. It was nice. I just experienced the regular dining area, that's where we ate, which is large with a big fireplace. The memory care was a smaller room, but it was nice. They do not have too many memory care patients there.
We only saw the front grounds as we went in, and it was well-kept. They offered a lot of activities. While we were there, many of the residents were watching a movie. They offered arts and crafts, and regular opportunities.
In the memory care, they did show us a bedroom set up and there was a lady who was watching a movie at the time. She had a stack of books on her bedtable that her family had provided in case she wanted to read. I don't know if she was able to read or not, but there is that opportunity that was there. So, I believe they give their residents all kinds of different opportunities.
The people who are living there can go out and make some decisions. They have caregivers who will go out to a store to help them if they want to buy things for special occasions. So, they're very flexible.
It's a modern design, and I'm not crazy about the way the bedrooms are designed. They didn't have any single rooms; they were all double rooms. They could put a single person in there, but it costs a lot more because that other part of the room isn't being used. Also, the way the room is set up, I wasn't crazy about it. They probably have enough closet space, but I wasn't sure about that for both patients. They encourage the doubles. But they did say if somebody wanted or needed a single, it could be done, but it costs a lot more.

One of the hardest things I've EVER had to do was to leave my husband, of 38 years, in a nursing facility. He started off in the Assisted Living section mainly because I believe I was in denial of his condition. Thought he could do so much more for himself. But just after a whirlwind 3-4 weeks, it was obvious he needed much more assistance than I realized. So, off we went to the Memory Care section. Best move EVER. Can't say the care is "better" in this part of the facility, but because he is in Memory Care he receives a lot more immediate care and attention. It's not the cheapest place, but then the old saying is true - you get what you pay for! I'm happy we chose Brookdale for him - guess I'll end up here too someday.
