Shelby Gardens Place was a beautiful place. The staff was friendly and nice. We visited the memory care and the lady that gave the tour was very nice and very helpful. She gave a complete tour of the place with no problems. They offer single private rooms, which was kind of what we were looking for. The dining area was first-class. It was like eating in a restaurant. It had plenty of room and you can either sit by yourself or with a group.
When we walked in, they were going to an activity session with the people in memory care. It was very enlightening to see people taking part in this activity. There was a slideshow where one of them was doing cards and stuff like that and she was just telling them what she was showing to them and asked questions. It was nice because it kind of stimulate their minds.
I was able to tour Shelby Gardens Place and I thought it was nice. I was impressed with the place because they were good, it was clean, and the people were kind. They had an activity going on when we got there, and they had an outside band. It was nice and clean, and the person that was with us was nice and informative as well. Their dining area was nice, we didn't eat but it looked like it had what they needed. They had a fitness room, they did the laundry for them, and they just took care of them. Some of the residents were in the TV area, and some of them were in their units. The upkeep was good, there was no odor.
Shelby Gardens Place was a bigger facility and the rooms seemed dark. When you look out the window, there's nothing to look at. The staff was nice though and it looked like they had a lot of things going on there in the memory care. They had a little area where you could go and do things, like coloring and playing games. It's a pretty facility. The lady who toured us around was nice.
I did a tour of Shelby Gardens Place. I don't have a glowing review for that facility. There were massive renovations happening at the time that we visited; I left very quickly because there were literally just patients wandering around with no one attending to them. The only person that I saw working was the person at the front desk, and then the person that kind of gave me the paperwork. I was just concerned about the level of care. It didn't seem like they were staffed very well, in my opinion, and seeing people just wandering around the grounds with nobody attending to them. There were fall hazards with all of the construction. It seemed like they kind of just had free rein to wander around, and that was kind of a concern because my grandfather was a memory care patient.
I don't recall seeing a room, I only saw the hallway that we walked through to get to the office area. Then I saw kind of a dayroom where activities were done, but there was no one in there, and it was extremely disorganized and messy. It almost seemed like it was just being used as a storage area.
We were unable to use the front door because of the construction, and the door we used didn't have anyone attending to it. We were just able to freely walk in, and had to kind of wander the building to find the front desk, so that was a little bit jarring.
We liked Shelby Gardens Place. It was in our price range (most of the places we visited weren't), and they also had companion rooms, which we liked. My mother-in-law will have a roommate because she likes having someone else in the room so she be feel lonely. They have three different sized companion rooms, and all the sizes we saw looked reasonable for what she would need.
The people who gave us the tour were very nice and didn't rush us through. They took their time with us and showed us everything, even the garden area and the outside area (which we really liked). It's all fenced in and really beautiful. It's where they can spend time outside, especially in the fall when the weather is cooler. The other places we looked at didn't have anything like that. The area where they eat was very clean and looked good too.
They have all kinds of activities, and they share them with the assisted living residents. They do painting and movies with popcorn, which my mother-in-law would love because she loves popcorn. They said they keep them very busy with activities so they'll sleep at night. I like that they don't just sit in their rooms, and that they keep them busy with activities throughout the day. The living atmosphere seemed good as well, and there were plenty of places for them to sit down.
Our dad has been admitted to Shelby Gardens Place. It was very clean and the staff was good and the administrator was also very helpful. He's in their memory care, and his room was very good, they have the furniture provided and everything. The atmosphere was pleasant, it was clean, it had open spaces, and the staff sees to the concerns of the residents. They had activities for the people there and they would report to us weekly about their activities, but not right now because of the virus. They provide the transportation even for doctor's visits. We can't do it personally since they will provide the transportation. It was a very serviceable place. I haven't tried their food but they would report that my father eats well. They provide good service for the money.
