I toured Legend of Allentown and I thought that was incredible. It was the most expensive of all the places I liked and toured, but it was beautiful. They have these little neighborhoods where you kind of congregate together, and they have four rooms, so you know who your neighbors are. They eat at a family-style table, or they can eat at bistro-style tables where it's just them. They have a kitchen that has snacks out on the table for them if they want them. They have a general activity room for them and an art room. It's just lovely. I met with the activities director, and they showed me the tools and things that they have. We talked about how they calm people down who are upset, and it is not drug oriented but just an engagement. They know what these people like. They ask for information about the individual. They try and bring them back to a place where they're happier. They have this biofeedback kind of seal that mimics a baby, and many people will either pet it like it's a dog or hold it like it's a baby. But those are the things they do to calm and redirect a person who's agitated with dementia as opposed to scolding them or drugging them. They sent me home with a little care package of brownies and a chocolate chip cookie that the chef had made as a thank you for coming in to visit them. Both my husband and I thought they were very good. The place was beautiful and looked like a hotel. It looked like you were going on a summer vacation. It was bright and clean. There was a level of activity that was almost calming and reassuring like you knew you weren't alone. The person who toured me showed me the rooms. She asked one woman and the woman got really proud and said "yeah, you can show her my room." They were lovely and adequate. They weren't huge, but they don't need to be. They just need to feel safe, comfortable, and cozy. Safe is probably the biggest word there. None of the rooms lock, which is good, but you can close the door.
