My mother is in Sunrise of Gahanna. I was very impressed with it. It's nice and it's kept up-to-date. It's very good for Alzheimer's patients. The rooms are very nice and large enough, and they have a lot of space. Everything's been great. I've seen them doing different activities, but my mother probably is a little beyond that stage where she participates in activities. She likes the food. I've been there several times when she is having a meal, and the food is pretty good. They have a new chef and it seems like he's doing a very good job. The staff is very attentive. It's not like a hospital where there's somebody all the time. There is a person in what they call a neighborhood, and each section of the memory care has a neighborhood. The people's rooms are down the hallway and they have a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen and that's kind of a community. They all eat and watch TV together and stuff like that. I'm very impressed with how that neighborhood thing works. Everybody is in the same condition but in different stages. Some of them are worse than my mother and some of them are better than her. Value for money is very good considering she has a full onset of Alzheimer's. I think they try to feed them what they like for their age and what's healthy for them. They have the best interest of all their residents at heart. I'm pleased.

I'm not pleased with Sunrise of Gahanna. Their version of memory care is basically they isolate the individual, so there's no risk of them leaving or escaping. Other than that, there's no cognitive work with their patient that I can see at this point; I've complained about it. I think they're understaffed, and I think that's the key. They're understaffed to a point where they're only able to do the minimal of functions that are needed. They also are not equipped. The facility is very nice. I just think it's poorly managed. They don't have enough staff to make a full meal. Therefore on Sundays, my father and the rest of the guests are getting McDonald's or fast-food from the facility. They're providing them with fast-food for dinner two days a week. They have a common bath for all of the residents to use. The other place we toured has a bathroom shower facility in each room, but Sunrise doesn't for the memory care. They do for the assisted living, but not for the memory care. They have very, very little attendance there for the staff at night, so when things happen in the evening, you're not sure if someone's there to address it or not. Their screening process for some of the residents as far as psychiatric behavior assessment isn't very good. There are some residents there that probably don't belong there. They probably should be in a more skilled facility, not a skilled facility. The staffing would be better if they had a better assessment of the patients that they're working with. A lot of times, the patient needs a lot more work because they're deemed to be in a skilled facility. There's a lot more effort and a lot more work needed from the staff because of the type of patients they're allowing to come in. It's a shame because some of the patients there are in pretty bad shape as far as their behavior, but the staff is not equipped to handle that. They had a nice courtyard and lots of open windows, so there's a lot of natural light that gets into the building. The exterior is well kept, and the interior is nicely decorated.

Sunrise of Gahanna was a nice facility. The staff seemed really good, but I had a gut feeling that it just was kind of an average place. I only got to interact with a couple of the staff. They were all very nice. Their hearts were really in the right place. It was a cheery and sunny place. It had everything you would want, including a nice courtyard.

They do the bare minimum - keep residents' faces and hands clean, provide food. Staff overheard screaming the f word at each other regularly.
