Sunrise of Dix Hills was very nice. We only saw the admissions lady. She took a review of what my mom was like. Everybody seemed very interested and genuinely helpful. They made us feel comfortable. When we went on the tour, everything was clean and smelled nice. The people that we saw were engaged. It's not like people were sitting around in a hallway, like in a nursing home, ignored. They were extremely strict. Everybody gets a temperature check. The staff is tested once a week. Everybody, as far as I know, and we were told that it's 100% vaccination. It's a mandate there. If people have COVID, they're quarantined to their room, and the staff has full PPE and they're monitored closely. We toured a private and a semi-private room and they were lovely. Everything is pretty much neutral colors, clean and bright. You're able to bring in your own pictures and furniture if you want. All the rooms have their own little kitchenette. There were a couple of covered patios with rocking chairs and benches, and there were a couple of gardens outside. It was cold, so we didn't go outside, but when we walked in, we got to see what was going on around the building. We were in the memory ward. It was very clean.

I visited Sunrise of Dix Hills. It is a very pleasant facility but mostly geared toward assisted living, not dementia care. They are at the higher end of the pricing range. I'm sure some places specialize in dementia care. Some places have both dementia care and assisted living. My focus is on places that specialize in dementia care, or those that have figured out how to most effectively integrate the two types. When dementia care seems more like an afterthought, then it's not going to appeal to us. The facilities and location are a plus, pricing, and programming, a minus. It's a relatively new place. It was in good condition. It had a very nice, secured courtyard area for outdoor activities.

I visited the memory care at Sunrise of Dix Hills. I felt it was chaotic and noisy. They had pets there and I'm violently allergic to dogs and cats. Being ushered into an office where a cat sitting on the chair is not something that I wanted to get into. The person I met there was very, very nice. She was knowledgeable. I just did not like the place. She also said that some people there liked the food and some people hated the food. That didn't sound like a very good recommendation to me. The staff was friendly. But the ones taking care of the patients seemed more interested in cleaning up than talking to the patients. It was chaotic all around and that's not for everybody. I think they should do something about the craziness of their art and the noise. They have music going on which is noisy and chaotic for me.
