I toured The Retreat for my mom. It's all memory care, which is the thing that I really appreciate about it. When my mom had gone into the hospital, I called them to see if they had any rooms, and they didn't, and they had her on the waiting list. That was my first choice. The very first time I walked into that place when we first started this whole adventure with Alzheimer's, I felt like this was the perfect place for her. I felt like total peace and thought that this would be perfect for her because I could see the care. I could see the activities that they had going for the patients, too. They don't force them to do them, but they have activities going constantly throughout the day, whether it be game time or exercise time, so they engage the patients. That's one of the things I just think is the coolest about that facility, because, to me, they really seem to make an effort to be there with the patients. While we were there doing our tour, there was a lady who opened the door and kind of tried to sneak out behind somebody. They were able to catch her and help her calm down. That was in the extremely bad side of memory situation, but the staff was right on the ball with it. They have locks to get in and out of the room and the main areas. The patients can't just wander in, but at the same time they have a nice enclosed outdoor area where they can go outside if they want to, and they can wander the grounds and they're safe. It's gated in the sense that they can be out, they can wander around, there's a beautiful shade, trees, and stuff like that, but it is safe. The staff member was very informative and very helpful. She answered all my questions. Even questions I didn't ask, she gave me the answers too. We were on our adventure of trying to figure out the Alzheimer's care situation, and she was able to really help me have a lot of peace about a lot of things. I really appreciated that because it wasn't like a business thing of, "OK, here's our facility, thank you for coming," it was more of, "Well, how are you doing with your journey with Alzheimer's? How are you doing with this situation?" She really seems to care, which I really appreciated. I would give her a six out of five personally. She does such a great job. She's obviously very caring, and not just informative about the business, but informative about Alzheimer's and caring about my mom as a person. I was there during two different mealtimes because I visited on two different occasions. The meals looked like they were really good. They prepare them onsite. The meals looked and smelled great. People seemed to really be enjoying what they were eating, and that was in the more advanced or, I should say, higher-level functioning Alzheimer's. In the lower functioning Alzheimer's care, they had meals there also, but what I really appreciated was that they had the different levels of being able to swallow. With Alzheimer's, their brain forgets how to swallow and sometimes they choke, and I like that they had the stuff there with the food so that the patients could swallow it safely. It wasn't just very clean as far as there wasn't some crazy smell or something like that. I also appreciate the fact that they had come up with a really ingenious way of helping keep safe the people who were sick, whether it be COVID or something else. They had a little half baby gate on each of the rooms, and if the person was sick, they would have that closed so that it was a visual thing for anybody going by that this person's in quarantine. It keeps them safe and the other patients safe too. That way, especially with COVID and the elderly, making sure that they're safe and secure. The hallways were wide, open, and bright. You didn't have to worry about bumping into people or tripping over people. It was a really great facility.

I had put a deposit down at The Retreat. They were, by far, superior to the other communities for what my husband’s condition was because everything was all inclusive, and they specialized in people with dementia. The community is very nice, and they have various rooms for the patients to go into that are relaxing and quiet. They have rooms with TVs. They have different things for the patient to do like exercise classes in chairs. They have a beautiful area outside, and they have cookouts and all kinds of activities for the families to partake of. They’re very large rooms, and they’re mostly 2 beds. They have big windows in every room, and the patient can decorate however they want. The rooms are all furnished, but the patients can bring their own furniture if they want.

The Retreat staff are very kind, caring, attentive, and professional, and they keep their promises. When they say they will do something, they do it. Security was very good. The doors shut and lock by themselves once you go through them. They have a code to get in. They take good care of my dad.
