We visited both of Cedarhurst of St. Charles' assisted living and memory care, but my dad would have been in memory care, and we didn't care for that situation. The tour was fine; the tour experience with both levels was excellent. That place is probably better in the assisted living area, we just weren't as crazy about the memory care. The room was tiny, and he would have had to have been outside of his room all the time. That area was nice, but we weren't as crazy about the food in the cafeteria area. The dining room area for memory care was like a school cafeteria and wasn't homey. The facility itself looked a little bit older, but it was very nice. Their apartments had the same type of arrangement as the other place, you bring your own furniture. The staff we met there were great, they were fine. They had a gym and a salon, and the place looked very clean.

The thing I liked the most about Cedarhurst of St. Charles was the room that we could have gotten for my mom. It had a sink and cabinets in it, and also a microwave, and two little refrigerators she could have used. That was the upside of it, but it was about $700 more expensive for her level of care, which is the memory care. However, another upside about that is it would never have changed. It would have stayed at that rate, and it could only change depending on how much care she needed. The guy who showed me around was real nice and super friendly. The place was nice, clean, and open. They had a large place that she could actually walk around in where it's just all contained in one area, so she wouldn't get lost.

I didn't like that Cedarhurst of St. Charles was three stories tall. The parking was also somewhat sparse, and they didn't have a lot of long staircases on the main floor. It had big wide open spaces but then you had to use an elevator to get up to the second floor. Then their rooms only had a toilet in them and no shower. They only had a community shower where you had to lock the door, but she had to have somebody in there with her, and I didn't like that fact at all. When I walked in the door, it didn't have the warm feeling that I was looking for. Gut feelings are sometimes good and sometimes bad, and my daughter said the same thing after we were finished. It's not that the presentation was bad, and maybe it was just because it was a rainy day, but I just didn't get the warmer feeling that I've had with the other two or three facilities we looked at. The person who gave me the tour talked about having a real topnotch chef and all this, but really didn't get into what activities they have for the residents and how they really dealt with them. The facility is next to a strip mall shop, and there was no big courtyard for them to get in. They were a little less expensive, until you go into a single room, then the price goes up and went over our budget.

I toured Cedarhurst of St. Charles. It was very nice, it was relatively new, it was very clean, the person that gave the tour was very friendly and very thorough, and we liked everything about it. That would have been my second choice. The room that he would have been in was in the memory care. It was a locked unit, it was in a corner, and it wasn't as nice as the other place. It's one of the places I would recommend.
