My parents stayed at Brandon Woods at Alvamar. It was just down the street from their house, and the food was good, but the place didn't have a way that they could be together. My father went to the hospital, so they got separated. The staff was insistent about putting my dad in a place where there is a sliding glass door and there are dogs, and they're going to put mom in memory care because they're concerned about her escaping. This place totally wasn't going to be able to meet their needs. They put my mom in memory care and they initially put my dad in independent living, but when he fell and broke his hip, that was going to necessitate assisted living.
They're a very large facility, and they have a lot of different areas. They have skilled nursing, assisted living, independent living, and memory care. I was told that they didn't have an apartment that they could both be in. We did a window visit there. The staff was a mixed bag. Some people were really good, but there were others that I wasn't too happy with. There was an activities director who was pretty good, but she eventually quit.
I sent emails and I asked about the whole situation with my mother's transfer to another place. My son and I got her things, and her room was really dirty. It was my understanding that they were going to transfer her to the other place and my son and I were supposed to move her things. As it turned out, that wasn't the case. I got a surprise call at 7:00 that night asking me if I was going to pick up my mom. Nobody told me that. I was upset that she had been waiting around. I was a little confused because it didn't make sense to me that on one hand, I'm being told I can't go in and visit her because of COVID, but on the other hand it's OK for me to pick her up when I wasn't going to be six feet away from her in the car. I picked her up and she was still in her pajamas, so I drove her over to the other place in her pajamas.
