The eleven (11) months my mom lived at Dogwood Forest was a terrible experience. We initially chose Dogwood, not because it was the nicest community around, but because of the director. My wife and I could tell he really cared about the residents and my mom. Within eight (8) weeks after my mom moved into Dogwood, the director lost his position. Fortunately he stayed available to us, even though he was no longer an employee, because many times we needed advise and had no other place to turn. The leadership at this place, after he left, could care less. Dogwood went through two (2) more directors there before my mom passed away. I was accosted by the director's replacement on the phone accusing me of having an outstanding balance on our bill. I knew that there was some misunderstanding and told the new director, that I'd look into it and call her back. When I verified with the Dogwood accounting department that my account was paid in full and up to date. I tried calling the new director three (3) different times and didn't receive any return calls. I received no apology and no explanation from her regarding why she confronted me in that way. There wasn't just turn over at the director position, the staff was constantly turning over with new people. We witnessed two (2) different times staff members shouting and raising their voice at memory care residents. Whenever we complained about it to management, we were either told they'd take of the misbehavior or the person was being terminated. Dogwood onsite management took offense to the hospice company I had employed, for giving me critical updates to the substandard care my mother was receiving from the Dogwood staff and the mistreatment they witnessed from the Dogwood staff to memory care residents. Dogwood tried to influence the hospice company to replace the nurse who had been attending to my mother. Lastly, I was threatened by the Dogwood accounting department that our rent would continue until we removed my mothers belongings from her room after she passed away. When I complained to the accountants supervisor that I couldn't get into the building due to the COVID restrictions, they relented on the threat. My wife and I learned so many things about the ownership and management of Dogwood Forest and the senior living community industry in general. It would have been so much worse for us if it wasn't for our friend, the original director, that remained available to use when we were at our wits end. You decide if this is a place you want your loved one to live in their last days.
