Palmetto Landing had an assisted living section and a memory care wing. The facility needed a lot of cosmetic care. The staff was friendly and very gracious when we came, but we realized that it would have been harder for my uncle to adjust to memory care wing there. The rooms were pretty sparse. I don't know what the activities were like, other than they said if a resident was higher functioning, they were allowed to go in with the assisted living for activities. They had housekeeping. The chef did bring us some freshly baked cookies, and those were very good.

I went to visit a friend's mother while I was in town. She was in the memory care unit. The unit was very clean and the smell was very pleasant. The residents were all dressed nice and some of the ladies had make-up on. The staff was helping the residents play BINGO which I thought was awesome. I was allowed to walk with her to her room and I was so impressed how she was able to have furniture from home and pictures of her family in her room. Everything was awesome. Even the food looked delicious.

Palmetto Landing was a nice facility and the staff was excellent. It was just not my favorite. The staff was knowledgeable, very caring, and very friendly. It's an older building but it was clean with very nice rooms and a nice dining area. The outside is very nice, very clean, and very personable.

I had a terrible experience with Palmetto Landing. My father was diabetic with early to moderate stage dementia. Upon move-in we reviewed this information on his monitoring needs with the director, the nurses, and the physician who would be seeing him here. I found out nearly 3 months later with an ambulance ride to the emergency room that they had not checked his blood sugar in 3 months! It was critically high. They kept commenting on mental status changes and never thought to check his blood sugar. That is unreal to me as an RN and unacceptable. The wellness/nurse director was always very rude to me on the phone, very condescending, and would call me to tell me things my father was doing "wrong" despite having dementia. Never had anything help to offer to improve his quality of life. Their memory care wing is a sorry excuse for memory care, now that I have seen how real memory care facilities function properly and offer care and support. My father did not receive that at Palmetto Landing. He was treated poorly and neglected. I would show up unannounced and find him in the same clothing, unbathed, that he had on 5 days prior, with soiled clothing in his room, and moldy food in his mini-fridge. This is an unsafe place for memory care for many reasons. My Dad lived here for 4 long months while we were searching for a better fit. He was disrespected and treated poorly. He developed new "behaviors" during this time and no one was willing to help get a consult for him. During that time I received many phone calls in the middle of the night saying he was being difficult and threatening to send him to the ER by ambulance and then just not accept him back. Basically threatening to abandon him unsafely if we could not secure a new facility for him quickly enough. They gave me 2 hours notice on a holiday weekend to hire 1:1 care or they would drop him off at the ER and not take him back. So we hired 1:1 companion care for Dad to protect him and ensure he was safe until we could relocate him, and those sitters would tell me what really went on in the facility. His "behaviors" were related to the disrespect he faced at Palmetto Landing and mostly stopped once we got him to a better facility with caregivers trained in dementia care and how to talk to and treat someone who doesn't understand what is happening to them. It is scary for someone with dementia to be in new surroundings with strangers caring for them, strangers wandering into their rooms at all hours of the night startling them out of sleep, yelling at them, taking their belongings, etc. A GOOD memory care facility will mitigate all these things as much as possible and calmly re-direct and console in a helpful manner, not yell at residents and expect dementia patients to understand and change their behavior on their own.

My mother is in Palmetto Landing. The staff is fine. We don't have any complaints right now. She has her own private room, but because she's in memory care, there's no kitchenette. The room is fine, and it's big enough for her. She gets involved in some of their activities.
