The Peaks at Old Laramie Trail was new. When the staff took us to the memory care wing, I was very, very disappointed in the way everything looked. The people that were in there were just all sitting on couches with their heads down. There was not a lot of interaction with anybody that worked there. I was not impressed or happy with the way the residents were in that facility. Most memory care residents were either sitting around eating or watching TV. The dining area seemed nice. You have to furnish the rooms and stuff. They went over some of the stuff they did with some of the residents, but I didn't see that.

The tour of the memory care clinic seemed promising. Talk of many activities for wellness and enjoyment. I've witnessed some activities and they are not dementia-friendly by any means. My family member has explained that the activities are hard and just make them feel worse and therefore they don't like to participate. My most major concern is that of sanitation and cleanliness. The resident I visits bathroom is often out of toilet paper along with feces/urine on the floor, on the toilet/toilet handle or on the shower chair. I visited two days in a row and feces were still on the shower chair from two days prior. The smell of urine and feces is very strong and my family member is often complaining about it, and I do not blame them. I can hardly stand it. The shower is also not safe as the water flows to the rest of the bathroom creating a slipping hazard. There is also zero ventilation in the residents bathroom. Laundry is not being done when indicated. We are having to take the laundry home ourselves to ensure they have clothes to wear. The Teepa Snow approach to care is not utilized in this facility - as they advertise. Care staff are very nice and friendly, but do not appear to be supported. More dementia-focused training and cleaning staff are definitely needed. There is also nowhere for visitors to use a restroom. I once had to use the bathroom in the common area and it was a very negative experience. No-one is checking paperwork of those who enter either. I'd also like to address that the male residents are often disheveled and unshowered, unshaven, while the female residents appear far more cared. The person I visit is very thirsty whenever I visit - please make sure everyone is getting sufficient water intake. Overall, the resident whom I visit and the rest of their family are disappointed in the care and cleanliness of this facility. It does not align with all that we were shown upon the tour.
If Only
The care staff are wonderful, helpful and kind. They answer our questions and promptly satisfy any requests we have. Our family member says staff work so hard he wishes he could help. We love them.
His room is average. We try to keep it clean. Window blinds with cords on each end are not dementia user friendly. The closet is behind the door. He can't find it.
Told on facility tour: veg. and flower garden to work in; bathroom to himself as the person next to him doesn't use it, bathroom was void of any other person's belongings, spotless; trike riding every Thursday; extensive alternative menu to choose from, all meal produce comes from their garden; Teepa Snow oriented staff; daily exercise and activities. All of this suits him perfectly.
Reality: Raised gardens very small, three nearly dead plants, access doors most often locked. Veg. garden in another location, locked, two plants. Gardening Time activity = staff waters plants. After move-in, every shelf in bath cabinet and 3 of 4 drawers completely full of neighbor's belongings, previously absent shower chair was in the shower and piled with clothing and toiletries, shower dangerously floods the floor, room fogs, no fan in site, no soap and towel to wash hands, strong urine and feces smell. Our resident's toiletries are on his dresser and the floor of his bedroom. We're told this is to keep other residents from taking his toiletries. Which means he is not visually prompted to wash or brush teeth.
Staff are gracious and quickly serve from alternative menu when a family member is there to request it. He loves the exercise classes, but exercise room is inaccessible to him. Exercise "bike"is arm pedals. Daily games such as Scattegories and Bingo sadden him as there is no chance to succeed. No tricycle rides. Resident rides in cart while a volunteer pulls them with his trike.
As one who feels well-versed in Teepa Snow techniques and partakes in Teepa's podcasts, current leadership is the polar opposite of Teepa Snow.

Not a place for your loved one if their being active & engaged is important.
Also, don't depend on Management for any guidance much less any response to your call or email.
Safety is an issue there - resident incidences causing injury & lack of resident supervision.
Care questionable in terms of resident hygiene and medication or prescribed procedures - leg braces, inconvenience protection, etc.
Basic dementia principles NOT applied much to determent of residents.

The Peaks is a very clean, very nice place. It is almost like a hotel and does not look like an institution. The staff is wonderful. They are activities, but my mom does not participate; she just wanders looking for things. They have games, arts, and singing. They try to get them to talk about their past and offer a lot of different ways that they can communicate because a lot of them cannot communicate orally. They try to keep them active. The dining area is very nice. They sit the people so that they are always sitting with someone and feed them in little groups so that they can be around people. The food looks good.
