Oakmont of Villa Capri at Varenna was inviting. It was new, modern, and upgraded. The one thing that bothered me was that in the companion rooms, one had a window and the other one didn't. So if it was a companion room, one person got a window and one person didn't get a window. They might have a really big studio or small studio, and they got charged the same fee for the large or the small. I had some concerns when I was there, I asked them and they were addressed, but I had some concerns with the staffing levels. The staff who took me around was very informative, she was able to answer all my questions. I brought a whole list of questions, and they were able to answer them all. They offer a bit more at a slightly lower price than the other place I toured, but they also had no facilities available and we didn't know when they would be available. They sent me home with a meal, it wasn't very good. The facility was very clean, it was a very upgraded and newer model, with inviting areas for activities. It was just nice. They had a salon there, they had a physical therapy location that I saw, and they had a variety of things like a library, entertainment room, an activity room, they had a theater, and they had a variety of activities there.

I toured Oakmont of Villa Capri at Varenna. The person that was doing the tour was just fabulous. It was comparable in every way. Everyone was friendly, and the people that lived there looked happy. The facility looked really clean, and everything looked brand new.
They have like this bistro thing, and we had some cookies there. They do have a salon and they have a place where they show movies. It looks like a small theater with a big screen, the people go in there and watch movies. It's nice and has comfy chairs.
We could see when we went by the kitchen they have a pizza oven, and the dining room was nice. The layout of the place is good too. It just seemed like it was easy to get from place to place. They have a courtyard in the middle where it's outside, and there are flowers and places where the guests can help plant the flowers.

Villa Capri was very beautiful. The people were very nice. They didn't have any available rooms. They were very accommodating. They showed us around and they showed us different areas. They were pretty thorough, but they really just didn't have anything available. It would have been something I would consider, but they are higher price range. They were kind of out of our price range; but I still wanted to check them out because they were local, and I heard good things about them.
My sister and I both went together. They were very accommodating. The staff who assisted us with the tour was wonderful. They really extended every courtesy to us, knowing that they didn't really have anything. I think they accommodated it probably for future, which would have been OK. They were doing what they were supposed to be doing, but they were very upfront from the very beginning that they did not have an opening.
The rooms were bedrooms with bathrooms inside the bedrooms, so they were more like a studio type. They gave us a brochure. They detailed activities, and they had an activity calendar. They were very well prepared. I got to meet some of the residents, who seemed to be very happy.

My mom has been at Villa Capri at Varenna (VC) since mid-2017 before the first of Sonoma County's devastating wildfires. I'm sure many of you have read about the horrific fires and may be you even read about how the staff at VC abandoned some of the residents who had to be rescued by family members and safety personnel. You can find the series of news articles by the Press Democrat on line.
One would think that that experience was a learning lesson and wake up call for the management and parent company at VC. But apparently, there are more...many more lessons to be learned. During COVID the challenges have continued because there are additional issues with hiring and retaining entry level and professional staff.
While my siblings and I continue to hold out hope that things will turn around and VC will once again be a high caliber provider, we have serious concerns. Currently, we and are addressing our concerns with a number of other families to the VC management. Having worked in adolescent residential care for over 25 years, I understand firsthand how difficult it is to hire and retain quality staff and I get how COVID has made that exceedingly more difficult. I really hope VC is able to rebound but it appears that this will be a long, long road.
