My father is in Sunrise of Sunnyvale. He's at that level where they can't handle him anymore. It's hard to tell because it's been shut down since the COVID-19 isolation. We can't really have one-on-one visitations or anything like that, so he's pretty much isolated. I've just been doing a lot of phone-tag conversations. He complains that the food is terrible and that nobody takes care of him, but I know that's not true because he has dementia. It's hard to really make a good evaluation at this point in time. I really can't see what's going on, but the few times that they did not have a lockdown, they had window visits. Their phone was very poor in that he could hear us talking to him on the cell phone, but we could not hear him. I told them they should get a new phone, and they said, "Yeah, we're working on it." Recently, somebody stole the catalytic converters off their transport van, so that required me to go out and hire another service to take him to doctors' appointments. Communication is very difficult, and it's hard to verify any kind of complaints, like how my dad says the food is horrible. I can't judge that without actually stepping in. We never had a taste test, and I don't know if he's participating in anything (I don't think he is). I know he's gotten out of control. We just had to sign a contract the other day for a babysitter, and it's getting pretty pricy. A few of the staff speak English very well, and they were not too bad with communication, but a lot of the other individuals have poor English, and they are very difficult to understand. Sometimes, they have people on the weekend in the lobby, and their English on the phone is poor. I'm not there every day, so it's hard to make an assessment on that. The outside looked clean, and there's nice landscaping. It's in a mixed-use area; across the street is commercial retail, there are condos and little mixed offices next door, and there is a little doctor's office and a couple townhomes. Down the street are some regular homes. It seems to have a lot of truck traffic from the shopping center across the street, and that bothers my father. He's not getting the services I think he should be getting. It's more on the medium-cost side. I've seen some others that are much more expensive.

The staff at Sunrise of Sunnyvale was great, we liked the security, the decor, and the amenities were fine. They had a personal/social director, and that was a good thing. It felt more like an institution, and it was not the right environment for her, but it was clean.

Sunrise of Sunnyvale was in good condition. The place was nice, but there was way more patients, so the ratio was much higher. The staff members were knowledgeable for sure, but for the price and for what I needed, it wasn't a match. It was a very nice place, but it was way too expensive. I would rate it a 5 for what they offer.
