We went to look at the Independence Hill Retirement Resort Community. The location is good. It's located in a very good, upscale part of San Antonio, but the traffic was just horrible. A lot of shopping and medical hospitals were very close. One thing that I didn't like so much about the property was that it was very hilly. The units inside the main building were very small for us. The bigger units that were outside of the main building, we found one that we liked the floor plan of, and it was very nice. It had nice, high ceilings, but it was on the second floor. We went to see the first floor and it only had eight-foot-high ceilings, so it was a little claustrophobic. The building seemed a little old. The young lady that showed us around was very nice.

I went to Independence Hill Retirement Resort Community. The man said they would be serving lunch, but they didn't. They serve two meals a day, which is morning and night. They had everything there that's necessary. The apartments were nice and clean. The staff was very nice. They had a nice handout. I saw some people doing their exercises. She showed me the library, the books, and the bridge place. They also go on trips. I'm not sure it's for me, but I think it's a very nice place.

Independence Hill is the whole package for my father and myself. They have food, fun, companionship as well as professional assistance for all types of needs and wants of the senior population. My Father has been here for over 8 years and I have been here 9 months and I can see clearly why he likes the community.

I thought that Independence Hill Retirement Resort Community was really good. It's one of my father's top two choices, and my father was the one that had chosen it, and so it's really kind of what he decided. I like that they had given us the opportunity for some discounts, and the facilities really, really looked nice. The staff who helped us during the tour was very helpful. The facility was very clean, but at the time, it was more of the overall impression.

We visited Independence Hill and we think it's a nice place. Everybody was friendly and the apartments were very nice and roomy. I didn't see any activities, but I read the list, and they have a variety of activities that would be good. The dining room was very large, it's very nice, and they kept it clean. The facility was well-maintained and clean too.

My mother has been pretty happy at Independence Hill. She's been living there for almost 10 years now. There is only one setback that is causing her to want to move, that is she lives on the 1st floor and the closest washroom area is on the 2nd floor. She used to live on the 3rd floor and there used to be one down the hallway, but she didn't like living on the 3rd floor because she was in a really quiet spot, there was no foot traffic at all, and she had to walk quite a bit to her laundry room.
Now that she's on the 1st floor, she would need to take her clothes up to the 2nd floor. Of course, they have elevators, but she has to take her laundry to the 2nd floor, wait for her clothes or come back home and then go back and pick it up and she doesn't like that anymore. She wants to just have an apartment with her own washer. Other than that, there is nothing wrong with the place. She's been very happy there, but she's just getting to a point where she's very particular with her clothes and she likes to do her own laundry, so that's very important to her.
The staff is excellent. They are probably one of the nicest facilities around, and though they are very old, they're still very well kept. They've been there for years, I think that's why they just never put washrooms inside their apartments. I think they have some in the outside cottages if you get one of those little houses. She loves the food, that's also why it's very hard for her to make the move. She knows she wants it, but it's hard for her to get something that's going to compare to Independence Hill, so we have to be really careful in choosing.
She doesn't participate in activities too much. She just plays Bingo and card games. She also likes to enter their art contests and decorating contests. As far as physical exercise like swimming and going to the movies, she doesn't like doing any of that. We've been there during family brunches. We got to eat with her on Sundays when things were normal. They also had Christmas parties. We eat with her there. Everything is perfect. They go above and beyond.

Since Independence Hill has had staff and a resident or two with COVID, they have completely locked down Independent Living. If your family member is there you can forget seeing them...even in formal arrangements made by the facility. The food used to be A+++ and now it is just thawed and warmed junk. The units are very old and the designs are very funky for making something of a home. Maintenance has to be called again and again. Dirty carpet on move-in with promises to clean was unrealized. Since COVID they have discontinued most of their activities and only basically offer bingo, sitersize and walks. How creative and caring. I think IH is just a hotel in the industry of slow moving death. I think they also care about the residents in the same manner as a hotel keeper....here today, gone tomorrow. Don't get involved, don't help. The residents are basically too scared to leave their apartment -- even just to go for a walk and see another human. I think this fear has been helped along. There is absolutely no mental health help for the seniors who are basically locked in. Too bad you're bored and depressed from being on lockdown for 4+months. Too bad you can't see your family at all, or any other visitor. They used to have formally arranged family meetings outside, but now they are offering nothing. Some families across the US are pulling their family members out of independent living because they are more likely to get the COVID virus there than in their family home. We found the administrative staff abominably rude and uncaring. At present (and presumably through the remainder of the virus) the "amenities" at the facility is a moot point because no one uses them. Off limits, you know. If we had known all of this we never would have moved our loved one in. A BIG mistake for us. So glad to be rid of this place....

My mother will be moving into Independence Hill Retirement Resort Community. I like it. It looked like an apartment complex, very clean on the inside, and very homey. The staff member during the tour was good and very helpful. The dining area was very large, and the food we ate was fabulous. They had a lot of activities like theaters, outings, music, and a choir.

The staff at Independence Hill Retirement Resort Community was friendly. The residents that I met were happy and friendly, and they were complimentary about their accommodations. There seemed to be a lot of activities that I could participate in. It was clean and up-to-date. My dad had lived there some years ago, and it had been kept up. I'm just looking forward to moving in there.

I liked Independence Hill very much, it was very small, and the cottage did not have a garage. The dining area was very good, with very good meals, and they provide 2 meals a day. The staff was very good and extremely helpful.

92 year old Mother at Independence Hill. We take her to all doctor appointments but we were not available for one appointment (out of 24 consecutive days of treatment) which was 12 miles away from IH. They advertise taking clients to their appointments but they were going to take her at 8:30 in the morning and drop her off for her 12:00 appointment and would have picked her up until some time after 1:00. She could not have waited. They would not be flexible. Not good service and a little shameful to do to this resident. My mother has always had appointments in Stone Oak but was referred to a specialist for treatment. While I have liked other things about this place, the inflexibility for ONE request for help is not reasonable.

I liked Independence Hill because you have the option of moving to assisted living if that becomes necessary. The facility's proximity to where I live is pretty good. We got really good vibes from it. The food was very good. There was variety, and it was quality, healthy food. They focused on menu planning. The downside was pretty big. The place was a little confusing to get around, but it was a very nice facility. They had a lot of activities available, and the food was pretty good.

We like Independence Hill. We like the location. It was very close to where we used to have our other house. It was a little bit different because it was older, but I liked what I saw. The apartment was nicely laid out. The food and the activities looked good. The staff was OK. However, if I have to be on the waiting list, it could be four to six months, they said, so that's the downside there.

My children thought Independence Hill might be a good one because I had been sick and it could be a good one for me to be in for a while. I've been here for two and half months now. I got a nice 2-bedroom apartment. They have the most fantastic food I've ever had in my entire life. It is super good. The joke is I may have to move out of here because I'm gaining weight. I have not participated in activities because I have been sickly, but they have a bit of everything, like tours and swimming. I like the nice dining room. I would recommend this to others.

We got into Independence Hill on the assumption that we might need to find a place for my wife as far as memory management. I am very allergic to tobacco smoke. But this place is not tobacco smoke-free. They have apartments, they have 4 units in a building, and then they have independent. Some of them are called cottages and some are just called houses. The upstairs apartments were side by side. It has the smallest elevator I've ever seen in my life. I think you can get 3 people in it. The hallways are small and dark.

I've been to Independence Hill a couple of times. It was upscale and was really nice. I get mail from them all the time inviting me to social activities. They had a wide range of services, as the name implies from a good deal independent living place. If I remember right, they also had individual houses as well as rooms or apartments. They also have continuum of care, so that you could go from independent living to assisted living, and I think even to nursing home care.
The rooms were very nice. They had some pretty good size rooms. I like the friendly demeanor of the people who live there. Not the staff, but the very nice folks. I met a number of them. It has a very good social environment. You got everything you need there.
