I have moved into American House Westland Joy. The staff is awesome. The food is better than I expected. There's too much food, actually, for me. My apartment is a two-bedroom, and it's cute. I love it here. There's no gym, but there's plenty of fun activities. They don't just have bingo, but every Friday they have entertainment. It can be a comedian or it can be someone who's singing, and they're not just off the street. What I have heard so far has been pretty, pretty awesome. They're not professional, but pretty awesome. I love the community gatherings for entertainment. I haven't been able to go to many because I've had some illness, and I plan to get back down there and join the group. Everybody is so friendly and caring. It's great. I love it here. Right now, it's independent when I moved in, and since I've had this little problem, I'm going to be wearing a pendant, and that's $40 a month. If I have a problem, if I fall or if I just need something, then they will come up. Let's say I have fallen and they need to get me up, I push the pendant, and then there's a small fee for things that I need. It's very caring. I can't say enough good about the services, I really can't. They call it a pendant. I was totally independent when I moved in, but now that I have this problem and I'm going to have it for a couple of weeks, I'm going to use that service, and then I will let that service go. All the meals are included. The meals are really good. It's much better than what I expected. It takes them a while to get a maintenance man to do something because I think there's just one and he doesn't work on weekends, but somebody is always here to help. However, I really would like maintenance to be a little quicker. It's clean. It doesn't smell. There's always something going on. Every day there's something that they do, whether it's playing euchre, rummy or bingo, or just somebody playing the piano. Their activities are very good. They don't push you into doing things. You just take and pick what you want to do. I got a two-bedroom and a storage area, so I think I get good value. I got a beautiful view, I got a little balcony, and I got good neighbors on both sides. The value is good.

I toured American House Westland Joy. The apartments that I saw were outdated. The carpets were dark; it wasn't the kind of place I wanted. I also did not see a gym. The person I talked to was pleasant and nice. If they could update the apartments, maybe I'll consider the place.

My mother is in American House Westland Joy. It's a good place for independent living. They do meal delivery, which is very good, but other assistance is not very good. They're very nice people. She's supposed to be assisted living. I didn't know my mom would need more care because she was independent at her home. When I moved her there, I thought she would be able to get used to the place, but she can't find her way out of her room and down to the dining room, or activities or anything. She's kind of trapped in her room pretty much. My sister and I would come every day, but she wouldn't remember. I have all her meals delivered up to the door. They don't have somebody checking on people. She needs more like a babysitter-type person, and they don't have anything like that there. It isn't a good fit for her. It's a very good place for independent living, though, and they have nice activities. They have some assistance, i.e., you can pay for medicine or shower and that sort of thing, but mostly their people are all independent there. It just didn't work out for my mom. The staff is very nice. The food is good. Mom can't find her way down there, so they always come and knock on the door and say, "We're going to have bingo in another ten minutes" or whatever, and then she says, "OK, thank you." There isn't anybody to assist them down. If they had somebody to assist people, it would be better. We had trouble with a lot of different things. Right now, we can't regulate the heat in the room. It's 82 degrees in her room and I've been trying to call for the past month and get that straightened out, also the shower, and the leak in the kitchen, and all that. The elevators are no good. It's not as expensive as a lot of other places I've seen.

American House Westland Joy seemed to be very personable. It would accommodate what we need pretty much. I like their activities, it was clean and well kept, and the staff was friendly. We had a nice tour and we were shown what were all the options. It was a positive experience. We looked at a studio apartment and a two-bedroom apartment. They didn't have any one-bedrooms available to show. They were accommodating. It was a reasonable size and livable. It seemed like it would be a good fit for what we're looking for. They had mentioned that they have a bus that takes them to certain places and they have various types of groups. If my friend decides to go on an independent living, it seems like it would be a good option. They have three meals a day available and they have 24-hour medical assistance. There would always be somebody around. They had the pull ropes in the rooms if you need an emergency. They had an area on each floor of the facility where you could get together like a living area or a group area where you could get together and talk to other people.

We went to American House Westland Joy. I liked the fact that they had just started opening the dining room again, but they had both one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments available. The clientele was wonderful, they were very friendly, and they were very willing to answer questions. I was pleased with it. I was impressed with it. They explained how they provide the meals, and they have on-site staff available to assist with showers. They have people come in and clean your place for you and do your laundry -- that kind of thing. They come out with menus. I was impressed with the atmosphere. They have a community room, they have aerobics one day a week, and they have a whole calendar that she gave me. I like that it had activities for everybody who wanted to join. The outside had sitting areas for people, and there were walking paths around the buildings so you could take walks. They had a vehicle where (before COVID) they were taking people to shops, grocery shopping, and that kind of thing, so that was convenient.

We are working with Patti from American House. We have taken our mother-in-law there. She likes it, so we know where we're going. The next step is to get her to agree on a start date. We love it and it is in a wooded area, so it gives her the feeling of still being up north. Patti is the manager there and she's wonderful to talk to. The apartments were nice and clean. What's nice about it is that it is easy to navigate through the building. We saw a schedule of activities and it looked enough to keep her active. They have a chapel, a nice menu, and transportation options for post Covid.

This community is very warm and welcoming. They go out of their way to involve the residents so they feel a part of the community. I feel very fortunate to have found this community for my parents. My dad died recently and they have done a great job helping my mom through the loss. The staff are truly the best.

I chose American House. We have to put down a deposit so that we are first in line. I like the staff, the rooms, and the facilities very much. There are a lot of similarities between all the communities, but the biggest thing for me was that it was light, airy, and didn't look depressing. I really like the friendliness of the staff. I thought this place was exceptional. I'm not that impressed with the food, but my mom is close enough to me that I feel like I can monitor the food more and she'll be eating meals at least once a week with us anyway. The one thing that really stood ot to me was that they are sponsored by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, so the symphony comes at least once a year and puts on a concert for the residents and go downtown to the Orchestra Hall. I thought that was extremely nice.

American House Westland Joy Senior Living is way more reasonably priced compared to other facilities. We have had a way better experience than when my parents were in another facility. They provide laundry service, cleaning, linens, and three meals a day.
