I have been living independently at Woodland Terrace for two years now. They have a nurses' station on both floors, and there are only two floors. If you need assistance, they're there for you and if you don't, that's fine, too. I chose this community because it's not far from where I was living. I was 87 when I had a fracture and it felt like it was too much to ask for my kids to try and locate people to come in and help me. I figured that at some point down the line, I'd probably need some kind of specialized care. I figured I might as well bite the bullet and then do what I had to do while I'm still able to make judgement. That's why I decided to sell my home and get into a senior living facility.
We have our meals, and there is a gym. There are some amenities that I like, but there are a lot of things that need improvement here, and I report them when I see those. The staff members are very friendly. I have no qualms particularly with the staff. The director needs some maturity though. I think it will get better if he gains more knowledge. He is a little bit too young for the size of the job, and I don't think he has the experience. He is a nice young man, but I don't think he is qualified for this position.
Food is one of our big concerns right now. Before I became a resident, I used to come out here because the dining room was open to visitors. The dining room was pleasant, there was music, and the food was excellent. We still have the same chef, and he is here for breakfast and maybe for lunch, but I don't go down for either of those meals. I went down to the dining area usually for the evening meal, but I haven't been doing that because it has been closed up. I think the chef got a short-order cook. However, if you ask for a salad, you don't get a dressing or if you ask for a sandwich, you don't get the fries. You have to call down every order. Also, the meat is overcooked, so it is not at all like it was when I was coming out here. What sold me on this place was the food, but it has just gone down. Nobody seems to be acting on anything. These guys in the kitchen are not on a professional level. It is disappointing because our expenses are pretty steep and then you get a 3% increase each year, so it just doesn't seem right.
The facility is only 3-1/2 to 4 years old. It's relatively new in a lot of aspects. However, to me, they're just using brush cleaners for the carpet in the lobby and in the hallways. Since Covid, all the rules have changed. You got body fluids and pet fluids in these carpet fibers and you need to have a good commercial carpet cleaner come, clean, and sanitize the carpets. You need to extract all of these and whatever in the fibers off of the carpet. They spot sanitize and clean it. It looks clean when they get done with it, and it stays that way for a good while. It's expensive, but it's not gonna get it done when they just use a brush cleaner. It doesn't do anything, but clean the surface. It doesn't get down there and get the body fluids.
We got a pretty good activity staff. They have bingo and brain teasers. We play a lot of cards here and I enjoy that. They try to spice it up in a lot of ways. However, they're pretty limited because people aren't allowed in their apartments. Only the nurses are allowed to come in. They are also the ones that are bringing the meals as opposed to the waiters and waitresses. They don't want even the waiters and waitresses coming in. Everything is pretty much curtailed in a lot of ways, but they still try to be creative. Like this Halloween, they went around down the hall and knocked on each door. They dressed up and they offered pumpkin pie with cream, candy, popcorn or things of that nature. Right now, I'm pretty disappointed in their food and the way the carpets have been looking and the treatment it's got. Our Thanksgiving dinner was very disappointing, too. I have a beautiful corner apartment with four widows, which you don't get in other places, two in the living room and two in the bedroom.
