I was just looking at independent living when I was at Gentry Park Bloomington. It looked like a nice hotel. The room was very clean and very well maintained. The staff members during the tour were very friendly and seemed to know all the residents by name. They had a big library, a big kitchen area, and a cafe area. The dining area was very big.

My sister is moving to Gentry Park within 3 weeks. Our ratings reflect our impression of the facility and may change once my sister has lived there for a bit.
The facility is fairly new and in good physical condition. The food options seem surprisingly to be very good; the residents are able to tailor their meals to any dietary needs (diabetics/sugar intake, heart failure patients/salt intake, and possibly Kosher meals - not yet confirmed). This has not been the case at many of the complexes we have visited, and certainly not at my sister’s current home. The apartments in the main building are smaller than expected and are tailored more to assisted living residents. There are cottages, with well thought-out floor plans and lots of light. All residents have an emergency pendant (this appears to be standard among the facilities we have visited). My sister is moving into a one bedroom cottage, which has its own full kitchen. A certain number of meals is included in the lease fee and are available only in the main building; beyond that food is the responsibility of the tenant. Various food options are available throughout the day, but I believe are charged to the resident’s account. Housekeeping is provided weekly, and we are told any maintenance needs will be promptly addressed. Again, remains to be seen. Garages are available between the cottages but there is a substantial extra fee. The grounds are not extensive, but are very attractive and have a good walking path. There are many cultural advantages to Bloomington: an excellent music school at IU provides the public with many classical performances; drama & theatre departments provide plays and operas; and so on. The YMCA is at most 3 miles from the facility, with a large pool and many available classes (water aerobics, balance classes), etc.
This facility is head and shoulders above the 8 other facilities we have visited.

The apartments at Gentry Park Bloomington were excellent. They showed us around and we were impressed. The place has just what we need. Their dining area was also fine as well, we saw some of their exercise facilities, and the home theater that's a worship area as well. The staff member that showed us around were very good, the grounds are more than adequate. Everything is very well-maintained inside and out.

Gentry Park Bloomington did an outstanding job with us. When we got there, they had a picture and welcomed us, and they sent us several different things. They conducted the best interview of any of the ones we visited. On the hill, they have independent living, and in the center building they have the next step-up. The staff was delightful. They still call us and even sent us a bouquet. They had an activities director and an activities room where they do knitting and crocheting. They gave us a pie and it was delightful. If we were going in their independent living, we would have to stay on one side, and there's a big four-lane highway that's really close there. We wouldn't want to stay on that side because we'd get too much noise from the street, but still, their facilities were outstanding and all new.

I went to Gentry, and it's brand new and super clean. However, it was too new in some ways. When building the place, they took down too many of the trees and plants, so it's a very bare piece of land. The person who showed me around was extremely helpful and informative. The cottages are extremely nice, but they're not really meant for one person or even a couple. Even though they said it's a 2-bedroom, the second bedroom was very tiny, and more for a person who would stay overnight. The rest of the rooms were enormous, it's wonderful, and easy to get around with a walker and a wheelchair. The amenities were brand new, very nice, but the people weren't engaged. They had guys sitting in the TV room watching a game together, the library was open, but there was nobody in there, and the art room looked like people used it earlier. I went in the dining hall, the food seemed to look and smell good, and people were eating, talking, and seemed happy about it. It was a more folksy environment.
