My favorite of all that I looked at was Independence Village of Rockford. What was important to me for my mom is socialization, and that community definitely offered a lot of different social activities. The room sizes were nice. They weren't oversized or undersized. They were just comfortable. It looks like they have good food, too. I didn't get to sample it, but they shared that their chef has been there for 20 years; that was a good sign. The staff seemed friendly and relaxed. They knew their residents by name. It just seemed like a good location as well. It was nice, well kept, clean, and had a home-like feeling. The staff were wonderful. They didn't have a pool, but they had a library, social rooms, and activity rooms (like game rooms). They had an exercise room with equipment, which was nice. You could tell that they did chair yoga. They offer a shuttle bus to take the residents out once a week to either go shopping, go to the restaurants, or take them to their doctor's visits. They offer quite a bit, actually. Another nice thing that they offered was nursing and caregiving services. It is not included in the monthly rent. They have a separate entity within their organization where you would have to pay extra for their services. They help with medication management, showering, dressing and things like that. I think that was nice. You have that option. Another nice thing is they really do try to keep their residents their till end of life, and so hospice can come in. You can hire private caregivers. You can do whatever it takes to keep your loved one safe and happy, so that was nice, too. Mom wouldn't have to move again. If and when the day comes when my mom just isn't able to be in DeKalb far away from all of us, I will definitely encourage her to move here in Independence Village. One more thing that they mentioned to me is that the price that you go in at will remain for the rest of your life. They don't do increases every year. In checking all the other places, their pricing was very reasonable; it really was. That's another big bonus. They weren't the cheapest, but they weren't the most expensive. They were kind of in the middle. It was nice knowing that you wouldn't have any rent increases.

We did check into Independence Village for my mom. It's an in-person tour. It was very nice. All the rooms were all updated, which was very nice. The common area was a little outdated, but overall it was clean, and the staff was very nice. They have 1-bedroom apartments and studios. There are four or five different options. They were playing cards, and they were playing games and crafts from what we saw. They have a library, an exercise room, and a common area where they can go in. They have a courtyard.

I absolutely adore Independence Village for my Very active 75 y/o mother! The apartments are clean and modern, the food is delicious but most importantly, the staff has become her second family! They care for her just as I would. Between exercise, doing crafts, playing games or just talking with friends or staff, she loves her home. There’s transportation to various events, appointments and shopping if you don’t drive or don’t want to drive in inclement weather. If your parent or loved one would like to live independently with the option of further care if needed, please check out Independence Village. You will feel good about the move and enjoy visiting. Call and ask for Donna, Shelly, Dawn or Jill and you’ll understand why this is the place for your loved ones.

My mother is in Independence Village of Rockford, and my experience there has been very good. It is very pleasant, and the people are very kind (even when they don’t know you’re watching). They have activities, the food is very good somedays, and not as good on others, and it’s basically only when the main chef is on vacation.

The people at Independence Village of Rockford were a little bit less ambulatory. There were more people that needed more help and I didn't feel I was there yet. The facility was a little bit older, but the staff seemed to be really nice. We ate lunch there, and the food was good. Unless you want to pay more, the most reasonable room was so tiny. It was smaller than a hotel room and that didn't appeal to me at all. It's a well-run facility with some great amenities for people that need more assistance.

I think Independence Village of Rockford is a wonderful community for my parents. It offers a variety of entertainment for them, it offers meals and security, and it allows them to be independent as opposed to assisted living. It's a beautiful community. The staff is excellent. My parents' room seems new. It is very clean, freshly painted, and freshly carpeted. I wouldn't call it spacious, but it is adequate for two people. There is a lot of musical entertainment, Bingo, a lot of group games, movies, religious services, and holiday-specific programs like Veterans Day and Christmas. They have Moving and Grooving classes, which is exercising to music. They also have open house in their apartments if they want to decorate and invite other residents in. Their dining area is open-eating for two hours. Residents can come and go whenever they like. They also can eat at the same time.

My parent is at Independence Village. We chose them because my grandmother was there, so we're kind of familiar with that place. They have their own independent apartments.
