About This Community
Lanier Gardens, Athens' first retirement community, offers one-bedroom apartment homes. A large number of apartments are eligible for rental assistance through the Federal government's Department of Housing and Urban Development program. Because of the assistance provided under this program, we must follow published income limits when renting to qualified applicants.

Lanier Gardens has a mandatory meal program provided in our beautifully appointed dining room seven days a week. Additional optional services available include participation in the Wellness Clinic and cable television service.

The people in Talmage Terrace looked happy and there were lots of things to do. There was a room for exercise and a computer room. The dining room was very spacious and well-lit with fabric tablecloths and napkins. They had a meeting room where people could play games like scrabble and just get gathered. I thought it was a friendly place. The apartments were bigger. The location was excellent. You can walk to the grocery store or the library, and it's close to hospitals. So, that would be very convenient if you don't drive anymore. I was pleased with it. Some people were walking around. There was also a hair salon and people watching TV while waiting for lunch. Everybody seemed cheerful. There was a courtyard that I thought needed some help, though. They could put some grass and maybe plants/flowers in. It was a huge building and it felt like a dormitory for seniors, but the good thing about it was it's in the middle of town.

Independent living is the main thing in Lanier Gardens, but it also involves a meal once a day. It's a good facility, except that they all have one-bedroom apartments on that side. On the Talmage side the entry fee is a quarter of a million dollars, plus about $3,500 a month, and we weren't up for that kind of pricing. Talmage is wonderful if you've got enough money, while Lanier has been here for years and it's great for one person, but the rooms are not big enough for more than one person because it's a 1-bedroom with a living area and a very small kitchenette. I drove the bus for them for a while too as a volunteer. They have bus trips, shopping trips, church activities, a library, and a little exercise room. They have a few things there and it's not nearly as expensive as Talmage, so Lanier is a lot better cost-wise. The lady that took care of us and gave us the tour was very nice and very knowledgeable.

Wendy Smith at Talmage Terrace has graciously worked with 2nd grade students at one of the local schools! The students have had the opportunity to share their stories with the residents, play games, create fun crafts together, and learn from the seniors! The students have had an amazing experience working with the seniors. This experience has given the students an opportunity to develop leadership skills in an authentic experience to serve their community! Thank you, Wendy and Talmage Terrace for your hospitality and support!

Lanier Gardens was a very large, nice facility, but we’ve come to realize that a smaller place is much better. It’s sort of noisy with so much activity and so many people that it could disturb my relative who has Alzheimer’s. The food looked very good. They had various forms of exercise, swimming, walks, excursions, and arts and crafts.

We visited Talmage Terrace. They have a garden where the residents can grow vegetables if they want to. It was a more vertical facility but my mom doesn't like riding the elevator. There were no ground level apartments available. The staff was excellent -- we were invited to dinner and the food is excellent. They are friendly and my mother could have been happy there.
