The tour I had at Good Samaritan Society-Florida Lutheran was great. We liked the pricing, the friendliness, and the amenities. Also, they had an independent, assisted, and nursing all in the same location. So, it was just very, very convenient to transfer from independent, where you didn't have to have any meals (you could choose to have meals if you want to), to assisted and then nursing home very seamlessly.
The staff was phenomenal. They were very caring and everybody knew everybody by first name and the residents talked to them like they were good friends. They have an exercise room, a craft room, a library, a puzzle room, plenty of open spaces where people have to gather, do laundry, and do house cleaning if you wanted it. It was just all very reasonable. The outside area was great. They had a lot of covered areas, and mature trees, all the sidewalks were shaved, no bumps, and plenty of sitting areas. It was wonderful.

There are four levels here in Good Samaritan Society. Currently, there's nursing care, the memory care, the assisted living in studio apartments, and then there are these independent cottages and that's where we are. It's the same address for everything and you just go by your apartment or unit number. These cottages are fairly old and have been here quite a while. They're duplexes and they're block construction. We have 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a screened-in porch, so we have the biggest type of unit that you can get. There's a common post office that we all go to pick up our mail, but the address is the same for everyone. We are just distinguished by our apartment numbers or unit numbers.
We moved here in the middle of the Covid lockdown. We haven't been able to do a lot of activities, but when it gets opened up again, it will be great. It's been good. I feel like they're very responsive and they look up for everyone. We get a lot of good attention. They come and fix everything that needed to be fixed in the apartment or just take the trash if we need them to. They're really good.
We have a full kitchen, a full fridge, a stove, and a dishwasher. It's a little dated, but when we moved in, they put in a brand new dishwasher and there's an up-and-down washer and dryer. We have utilities and 1 full size bath and 1 half bath. The full size bath has grab bars, so it's easier for you to step in the large shower. That's been updated from a tub, so it has no tub. We have the opportunity to go to the dining room and just pay per meal or we get a monthly ticket, which we have not been able to do because it's part of the lockdown, so we just do our own cooking.
They've opened up a chapel service which they social distance in one of the empty units and we go to that every Wednesday morning. They have also a bus that transports on a regular basis on a schedule, and you can go to grocery stores, drug stores, and banks. They ask you which bank you want to go to and there's a "bank day" for the bus and they take you there. You can also arrange transportation for a doctor's appointment ahead of time like 24 hours and that's a very good amenity.
Under the circumstances, I think they're really doing the best they can. Compared to other places and the amount that you have to pay to get in, it's great. Sometimes those places need huge amounts of money to get in and that wasn't the case here, so I feel like it's a good value. They're doing everything they can to watch us and help us get to where we need to go.

I stayed at Good Samaritan in Deland, but moved out of there because their assisted living wouldn't take my cat. They would take the dogs and not the cats, so I moved out. It was actually perfect for me, I was independent, and they gave me a very nice apartment. I wasn't in assisted living, so I could have my friends come over. They were very good to me, and they helped with things that I needed help with. I was just mortified to find that they wouldn't take my pussycat if I ever went on assisted living. I couldn't possibly give her away then. My cat and dog have been together all their lives, so they would be brokenhearted.
They were very efficient, and I think it's the best place that I have ever been in. The apartment was just a big room with a bedroom and a big living room, but it was nice being on the ground floor. I could walk straight out with the dog with no problems at all. It was very nice and the whole thing was perfect for me. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but I thought of the time that I would need to go on assisted living. I want to not have to worry about my cat when that happens. The staff was very nice, but I wasn't able to come in contact with a lot of them because I cooked for myself, just like living in an independent flat. The people I met though were very, very efficient and nice.
