I wasn't that impressed with Harvard Square Retirement and Senior Living. The one-bedroom apartments were smaller than the one-bedroom at the other place, yet the price was the same. I wasn't impressed with the apartment I saw. The other place was kept up better. They had dings on the walls and the staff indicated that they were doing refurbishing, that's why they haven't repaired any of that stuff, but I didn't see any refurbishing going on, so I don't know. I wouldn't live there. I wouldn't recommend somebody going there. They gave me lunch. The service was good, the lunch was good, and the dining room was clean. It's just for what they had to offer, their prices should have been lower than what they were. The person that I dealt with was very nice and very knowledgeable. They had more assisted living than they had independent living. They only have one floor of four floors that's independent (the rest are assisted). The lobby was clean and well-lit. They had a small gym, a library, a movie room, buses going to the supermarkets once a week, bingo, and mind classes. They had a full array of things to do. They would go to restaurants once a week.

I did a tour of Harvard Square Retirement and Senior Living. If I decide that I'm going to move that's where I'd go. I wouldn't look any place else. It looked very professional, clean, and modern. They looked good. Their staff is the best, I can't remember what her name is, but she sold me on the place. I've talked to her since then, I tell her "I'm not ready yet, but when I am, I'm coming to you." I had a meal there. The food was very good. I had a hamburger and fries, but I was told I could order anything I wanted. What I like best is the combined thing; the price, three meals a day, seven days a week, the staff, and the room was really nice. What I was interested in is a living room and a little kitchenette, and then separated into another room both the bedroom and bathroom.

Harvard Square Retirement and Senior Living know I have no transportation, and they have a transportation service there. I was scheduled to go there, and we had a time like 1:00 in the afternoon. I don't know what happened, but the actual manager of the place picked me up in his own car because the transportation wasn't there when they said they would be. He drove his own car, came out here, and picked me up at my house. He also brought me back, so that's above and beyond. They have the same amenities as with the other facility. They're doing a bigtime remodeling and updating of the place. They're remodeling everything, and they're moving things around. They've got it all handled. The rooms are very nice. It's an older facility, but it's well maintained. The way I was treated, they would get a 5. They don't have many people that are basically running the place; then they come and pick you up at your house and take you over there. They're in this remodeling project. There are areas where you can't go, and they've got other things. We know what it is like when you're remodeling or changing stuff around, but everything is taken care of like where your safety is the primary issue. Everything is clearly marked.

I went to look at Harvard Square Retirement and Senior Living. The staff was very helpful. The main building is lovely like a resort hotel. It looks down over a park, and it is very, very nice. They're doing some renovation, so it shows its age in some places. They have a fitness room, a pool table, a dining room, a library, and a beauty salon. The staff knew what she was talking about, and she showed us around. They are undergoing some renovation construction.

My dad used to be a resident of Harvard Square. I ate there a couple different times and the food was good. The rooms were nice and big with good views. The staff was friendly, but a couple of residents from the memory unit were picking on my dad, and they didn't really handle that in the best way so we moved him out. My dad loved their gym and they had physical trainers. It's a really nice thing for them to have. They also do outings with the residents and other stuff.

Harvard Square has a lot of activities and they really keep the residents active. My mother-in-law would just sit in her chair if you let her, but she does planting and puts puzzles together, which is so much healthier for her. The staff members are friendly, nice, and caring people. My mother also lived there for a few years and we loved it. They were great. They have a really nice walking path in the back and it's well cared for. The price is reasonable too compared to the other facilities we looked at. My mother-in-law has a 1-bedroom with a bedroom, kitchenette, and an open area living room. She's got two big closets so she has plenty of storage. She's really happy there and she loves her apartment. It's more reasonable than the other places, which surprised me.

They were pretty good at responding to me. I looked at their menus, and they seemed to have good quality food. The apartments were not as fancy, but Harvard Square was a smaller facility, which I like. It's homier and wasn't as institutional. They had a lot of activities. They had a bus or van that took people all over for shopping and different events. I don't think they had a stove. I cook and I eat a very specific diet, so I would want to be able to cook my own food. I like that they had some individual décor in their units rather than the standard where they were all kind of the same.

I liked the rooms at Harvard Square. I don't think they had a garage.

Harvard Square has a feeling of home. The environment, staff and the residents were all what we're looking for. I've been living here with my wife. I definitely would recommend this place to others.

This assisted living facility is in a very small building that doesn't look like anything fancy from the outside and needs to be updated some, but it's very clean and well maintained. Everyone seems to love it once they become residents. It's almost comical. Residents who need to be away on a hospital visit, for example, are always anxious that their rooms will still be available for them"”which says a lot. I've heard many of them repeat the same phrase: "I have to get back to Harvard Square." The staff and administration just make it feel like home. It seems that the women residents especially love living there, saying they appreciate the homey, intimate atmosphere and personal care they receive. The rooms are very small, but clean"”and bathrooms have a great setup, which makes them easy to get around. The food is excellent. Residents are always satisfied with it, and there's a cook who has been there a long, long time and takes pains to please individual residents as much as possible. The administration treats the employees well"”from the housekeeping staff to the cooks to the hairdresser. It seems like a pleasant place to work, so it's also a pleasant place to live. There's just a good atmosphere at Harvard Square that feels contagious. The whole staff is very professional"”and will even come to visit residents who are released into nursing homes in the area, which is a rarity. Finally, there are great activities offered"”walks around the block, shopping to malls and to nearby concerts. The activities director is very creative and also does a lot of research on residents' wishes"”going the extra mile to find activities for those on limited incomes. Residents are also encouraged to do tutoring with high schools in the community, so they get the chance to be engaged that way, and exposed to people of other ages in the community.
