My wife and I lived in Carlsbad By the Sea. It was pretty good up until the time we left. We're independent living. The in-house doctor there with the nurse decided that my wife had dementia, and that she had to move out. Of course, I wouldn't let her move out without me so that's why we left. Basically, they threw us out. You really have to be careful. If you or the wife is even close to having dementia or needing special memory care, they're going to toss you out.
When we first moved in, the food was great. Everything was great, but it slowly deteriorated. It's not just my opinion, but the other people that have been there a long time have seen the food and the service deteriorate.
They also had a huge turnover. A lot of their people have left to go get better jobs. Right now, the people that run it are after the buck and do not pay much attention to service; it's gone downhill.
We lived in two different apartments while there, and both of them were nice and well done. When you move in, you have to pay a move-in fee of several hundred thousand dollars. They redo the place for you. You get to choose your carpet and this and that, so it would look like a new home. At least, that's the way it was.
There were a lot of activities. We went through several activity directors. The activities depended upon who the director is, how well the residents enjoy it or not, and the number and types of activities. There's no consistency. It just depends upon who's hired to do the activities. They have had head chefs, but the same thing happened. They would come in and last a while. The department heads would also come and go. If somebody asked me if I recommend that they move in there now, my answer would be a no. I recommend that you would have to do a lot of investigation first before you move in.
