My mother in law has been at Westmont since May 2022. What seemed pretty good for about 2 months has deteriorated into a daily struggle. One of the "amenities" that she liked was the bus ride on Saturdays. Since she is not driving any more, just getting out for a joy ride and to see San Diego was very appealing. In the middle of the summer the bus driver quit, and there has been no replacement yet (6 months later). This is very disappointing to her. She likes the Thursday afternoon happy hour where there is always live music. There is a park attached to the property and this is very nice to be able to take a walk out to the park on a sunny afternoon. The property is kept up well. The staff are all respectful and kind, but the FOOD SERVICE is terrible!. And much of the food offered is salty and high in fat/fried/breaded. Just not the best diet for seniors that are trying to stay healthy. She is ill right now and is having her meals delivered to her room. Sometimes they come on time, other times she has to call because she has not received her meal. Last night she never received her dinner. The seniors really look forward to meal time - it is for a lot the highlight of their day. In my opinion, the wait staff and kitchen prep staff is doing a very poor job.

I'm staying at Westmont La Mesa. I've looked at other places, and although they're very nice, this one seems to fit the bill best. One thing that I don't like is that we don't have enough transportation, but I guess all the places are feeling that pressure. They can't get a driver qualified to drive the bus, and that's a problem, getting people to their doctor's appointments and whatever. I wish they could improve the driving facility. They are short of staff. Since we were independent, and they also have memory care and assisted living, we are a little shortchanged on independent living. During the first year, with COVID and all the restrictions and delivery, I take that into account, but it has improved. It's not topnotch, you can't expect that with everything. We're located in a park, so that's another added feature. There's a nice little park adjacent to the building. There's a pool and a theater. They can't seem to get the temperature right in the theater, it's always freezing cold in there, but I don't know just why we keep complaining about that. But there are activities, and they are sufficient, it just depends on who's here that day. We have a problem with staffing, that is a major problem. It's more expensive than the other ones I've looked at. They need to improve some of the things that they promised us when we moved in. We don't go on trips anymore, since the bus that they have for the facility has not been out for eight months, because they can't get someone qualified to drive it.
