About This Community
Visiting Angels of Newport News was opened in 2003 by owner, Patty Andresen Knapp. Over the years, Visiting Angels has become a name the community trusts with their patients and families. We offer Companion and Personal Care services for up to 24-hours per day to clients on the Peninsula from Williamsburg to Hampton, as well as Smithfield and Carrollton. We offer extensive training to our caregivers, included disease-specific speakers and in-services. My dad is really happy to have them here. The hands-on care and companionship combined help him a lot.
We have used them for almost 2 years at this point, and the entire time they have been excellent. Their caregivers are absolutely wonderful - with excellent training.

The quality of care has been fantastic. Mom doesn't know what she can't do. It's relaxed for my sister and I to have someone there to take care of Dad.
They are keeping me in the loop. I'm in Colorado right now. Yesterday, my mom and dad expressed they want to change their hours. Rebecca called me, and I'm so grateful for that.

Even when he was difficult at first they did not give up. They kept trying. The only thing was that my father was not cooperative.
They were very helpful. They worked with me because they didn't have any openings at first. They were able to find an evening shift for us.

They do personal care and are there for four hours so there is a little bit of sitting around. They could interact with him a little more.

The most helpful part of the services is that one of the ladies would paint my finger nails for me.
The agency came and if I didn't need them to do anything I told them to just sit down and I would do it. I wanted to learn to do things.

She can't make the bed anymore. I have a hard time with that too. They make the bed up and change it once a week. They give her a shower. They fix her lunch for her. They keep everything sanitized.
I don't have any complaints. They check on us. They check to see if we are alright. We were without power, so we had no need for her, since all we could do is lay around and sleep. The power came back, and I told them that they could send the caregiver. They sent her over and she was on time.

The aide was nice but my parents didn't know how to utilize her properly. She wasn't motivated enough to get up and take initiative.
We would've liked a caregiver that was more motivated.

It depends on their needs but it helped me a lot. They could improve by giving me more hours. They have to ask the office first. It is up to the coordinator.

We don't always have the same caregivers coming, and I'd like more consistency with them.
I thought that the caregivers would be able to offer more suggestions and give more feedback on ways we could take care of our loved ones better, but they haven't offered anything.

It's given me time to get away like go do art work in my shed and relax. My wife doesn't want me to be away from her and wants to follow me all around the house all day long.
I like that the two different caregiver' we've had are wonderful, courteous, took time with my wife, color with her, and do the activities with her that entertain and relax her.

We spent a lot of time with the angels sitting around when we could have had assistance.
They could set up the care a little better within the house, and they could explain to the family how to best use the provider's services.

They were able to stay with him and give us some relief. They could do things for him so that we didn't have to do his total care.
They were genuinely concerned about the person. They were willing to do whatever was needed and made genuine contact with him.

I've had caregivers for the past four years, and Visiting Angels has been more reliable. I haven't been as worried. Although, I've recently had issues with the caregivers.
Sometimes, the communication isn't the best. I've also had a couple of caregivers that haven't followed the care plan.

I'd like them to do what they say they'll do in their brochure or contract.
Even with full-time care, we still worried that Mom would starve and needed an extra set of hands to make sure she was fed, so we went to them.

It's probably for the best. I have some other medical issues. I'm a level 2 diabetic, and the right side of my heart is degenerating, so I have some strength left.
Most of the people that come out know how to scramble eggs and fry up bacon. There is one who puts spices and things like that, and she'll try to fix me a regular meal. I like the way they cook for me.

A lot of the time I would have to tell them what to do. They didn't keep going on their own and they waited for direction a lot of times.
I like them and was very happy with them. If I was back in my own home, I would hire and would recommend them. They felt like companions, rather than help in the house. I liked the ladies who came and I was happy with what they were doing. I had no complaints.

I would recommend them. I don't really get to see the caregivers at work; I just have brief encounters. My mom seems to like them.

My mom has dementia, so sometimes she isn't as independent as she would like, but sometimes she seems intimidated by the caregivers, and she doesn't let them know. My sister and I have been leaving notes for what my mom would like.
I would like them to do spot checks more often on the people who are in the home without the people knowing that they are coming.

They need to get the person to motivate them to get out of their apartment or wherever they live. They need to encourage him to get out and be more active instead of doing whatever he wants.
They are very flexible with the schedule. They call me a lot and communicate with me a lot about my dad and what is going on.

They have every kind of care that they have under the same pay scale. I would suggest a tier based on service with an applicable fee. If they are just sitting, they shouldn't charge as much.
