About This Community

Home Instead is a non-medical provider of personal care, companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, errands, incidental transportation and even Alzheimer's and dementia care. Our CAREGivers encourage, assist, and stimulate our clients in a variety of activities that improve their quality of life and help them maintain their independence. All of these services allow a senior to stay HOME INSTEAD for a longer period of time.

Home Instead - Caregiver Skills

Safety training on home safety, avoiding injury and falls, preventing strain and pain, safety in the kitchen, cautious cleaning, safe driving, outdoor safety hazards, and disease protection and prevention.

Basic training on emergency situations including stroke, falls and fractures and sudden illness, communication tips including communicating to those with dementia or Alzheimer's, activities for seniors to engage in, mealtime preparations, housekeeping tips, signs of abuse, and tips on reducing caregiver stress.

Advanced training on understanding senior illnesses and conditions, depression in seniors, caregiver stress, in-home exercise for older adults, making mealtime fun, communication tips with the senior, their family, and the caregiver's franchise office.

Activity training including reminiscing activities, modifying activities, activities in facilities, adapting activities for those with impairments, different types of engaging activities for older adults such as gardening, mind builders, and crafts and hobbies, and getting a senior involved in the community in places like senior centers, worship services, volunteering and errands.

Cathie is my mom's favorite provider. She's very excited when she's coming. Home Instead gives my sisters and I peace of mind, and we're very happy with the services provided.

Very understanding for what we need for my mother in law. We needed a service fast and the hours . Homestead was there when we needed it. The home aides are very understanding and wonderful dealing with my mother in law. They keep us informed of our mother in law with her appt ointments while taking her to and from her appointments. My mother in law seems to be happy. Thank You

I have never had a bad experience with Home Instead, either here in Mechanicsburg, or in Pittsburgh when we used them. They are a very dedicated group of people that only hire those who truly want to work with this population. I work in Human Services professionally, so I am quite picky! We love our Mom's Caregiver, Angela. She is wonderful. In fact, the entire staff on duty at the nursing home have raved about her all along too!

Earlier this year I was faced with a situation with my mother where she needed to have someone stay with her 24/7. As an only child with no family nearby, I quickly realized I could not handle everything on my own. I met with Chris and we came up with a plan where I could spend as much time as I could with my mom, while feeling secure that she was being cared for while I also spent time with my husband and children. Overall, I was very happy with the caregivers who were assigned to my mom's care. D'anne, in particular went above and beyond to treat my mom with respect and dignity even during the days she was angry or confused. She found ways to connect with her and my mom would visibly cheer up when she showed up to stay with her. Those little things meant the world to me during such a stressful, emotional time. Only once I had a concern with another caregiver and the misunderstanding was dealt with quickly and easily. Brooke was wonderful in answering my questions about scheduling and accommodating changes. Kendra checked in with me regularly to make sure I didn't have any concerns and to make sure I was doing ok. I truthfully do not know what I would have done without having such a caring, supportive group of people that I could rely on during my mom's last few weeks with us. I will be forever grateful for their kindness in their care of my mom.

Dad's Caregiver

I have had nothing but a positive experience with Home Instead Senior Care. My dad has been a client with them for almost 8 years. He's had many caregivers - some good, most of them excellent. We only had one instance where we felt the need to replace a caregiver and it was handled quickly and appropriately. The scheduling staff can be commended for handling their busy workload and are always pleasant when I need to contact them with a schedule change. As I've watched my aging father decline in health, I couldn't be happier with the choice we made to go with Home Instead. He's been fortunate enough to live in his own home and we feel blessed to have the compassionate care of the HI caregivers to continue to make that a reality.

Under no circumstances would I recommend this agency. Although we had one caregiver we liked (who promptly found a better job), we had others who were lazy and not forthcoming with the truth. Often I would call and find that my mother didn't know anyone was with her, because the caregiver would be in the basement watching TV, rather than even checking on her (let alone caring for her). Also, despite my many requests that my mother, who has dementia and does not easily get to know people, be given the same caregiver as often as possible, new ones started showing up on an almost weekly basis--sometimes two in one day. And despite my many requests that I be notified whenever there was a new caregiver, I never was. (I would even call the office and say "Mary" wouldn't be needed next week, just to see if they would tell me that "Mary" was two caregivers ago. They never did.) When I called and left a message to say that we were terminating our service with Home Instead, the office manager had neither the courtesy nor the courage to return my call.
