About This Community

Home Instead is a non-medical provider of personal care, companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, errands, incidental transportation and even Alzheimer's and dementia care. Our CAREGivers encourage, assist, and stimulate our clients in a variety of activities that improve their quality of life and help them maintain their independence. All of these services allow a senior to stay HOME INSTEAD for a longer period of time.

Home Instead - Caregiver Skills

Safety training on home safety, avoiding injury and falls, preventing strain and pain, safety in the kitchen, cautious cleaning, safe driving, outdoor safety hazards, and disease protection and prevention.

Basic training on emergency situations including stroke, falls and fractures and sudden illness, communication tips including communicating to those with dementia or Alzheimer's, activities for seniors to engage in, mealtime preparations, housekeeping tips, signs of abuse, and tips on reducing caregiver stress.

Advanced training on understanding senior illnesses and conditions, depression in seniors, caregiver stress, in-home exercise for older adults, making mealtime fun, communication tips with the senior, their family, and the caregiver's franchise office.

Activity training including reminiscing activities, modifying activities, activities in facilities, adapting activities for those with impairments, different types of engaging activities for older adults such as gardening, mind builders, and crafts and hobbies, and getting a senior involved in the community in places like senior centers, worship services, volunteering and errands.

I currently have Home Instead Merrick helping with my husband's care. They help out with showering and preparing lunch or breakfast, whichever is needed -- but it's mainly lunch. They see that he's dressed properly because he puts on daytime clothes at night and nighttime clothes in the daytime. They check after him and clean up if needed. They also do light housework, vacuuming, and take him for a walk when they can. Today he has a dental appointment, and the caregiver will be accompanying us. It's his first visit to that dentist so I'm going, but the caregiver will be driving us and acting as a companion to help him understand what's going on. They do whatever I ask them to; sometimes it's an errand, and sometimes just getting lunch for him if I don't have anything prepared. It's whatever I need at the time, like washing clothes and folding them from the dryer, and things like that. Whenever I have to speak with the manager or the people at the office, they're always very kind, very thorough, understanding, and easily reachable, so I've had no problem whatsoever. I've only been with them maybe three months, but they have been very responsive. If somebody could not come in, which happened a couple of times, they would let me know ahead of time and determine with me whether or not I wanted a replacement. I have not been with them that long, but I'm very pleased with them.

I have been delighted with the services provided. I have had peace of mind knowing that a well trained, intelligent, resourceful and friendly caregiver is there for my spouse when I am away. She is punctual, dependable and kind. Our interactions are helpful and respectful. I have always found the agency to be responsive to my specific needs, including extra coverage and changes in hours.

We are super happy that we have the same caregiver that we originally started with. The previous agency we dealt with was like a revolving door and changing aids every week or month was really hard in my parents. Home Instead listens to my concerns and addresses them promptly. They make sure their caregivers take good care of my parents; and they must take good care of their employees as well since there is so little turnover compared to the other agency we dealt with.

The whole idea of getting help for a family member is fraught with emotion. Many people can relate their own experiences but you still feel responsible and concerned about doing what’s best. My mother has been fiercely independent in her own home for 70+ years and was resistant to outside help. Home Instead has qualified people to answer all your questions and allay everyone’s concerns. The transition has been seamless and mom is happier than i’ve seen her in a long long time. Her companion is a PERFECT match!

We are using Home Instead Senior Care for my mom. They are amazing. I called them on a Monday morning, and they came and interviewed my mom on Monday afternoon to find out exactly what type of caregivers we required. By Thursday, I had somebody in place. My mother has advanced-stage dementia. She cannot drive anymore, so she needs a companion to bring her to exercise class, food shopping, the library, and everything that that she needs to do. Unfortunately, my mom has taken a fall, so, right now she is not active. They are just making sure that she is walking with a walker, helping her bathe, and giving general full-time aide. The caregiver is very caring and very understanding. In working with a patient with dementia, you have to have a lot of patience as there is a lot of confusions that arises. I chose them because they sounded like the right fit, and when I am asking questions, I am getting back what I am hoping to hear. They fulfill my expectations.

I have been in touch with Home Instead in my area, they have identified a person to help us at home, and my husband is happy. Everything turns out for the better. We tried two or three caregivers at the beginning, and finally we found the right one for my husband. She comes absolutely on time. She is very attentive to my husband's needs, and she is quite discreet, which is also very important to us. The company follows up just to make sure that what the people tells them is true. I really appreciate that.

I did know about Home Instead Senior Care long time ago. I've heard about them, and I would say they are very good. The aide was very compatible and very professional. If you didn't like one, you can always try another. We didn't have to try another one because the first one they sent was excellent. The man who runs the company does a thorough job to come visit the client first. I just felt it was very good. The caregiver was prompt, friendly, and very kind. I have no complaints at all. I had a 100% success with everything. It was a short term, but it was very good. There are always there to answer any question, and when you call them, there's always someone there.
