About This Community
Home Instead is a non-medical provider of personal care, companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, errands, incidental transportation and even Alzheimer's and dementia care. Our CAREGivers encourage, assist, and stimulate our clients in a variety of activities that improve their quality of life and help them maintain their independence. All of these services allow a senior to stay HOME INSTEAD for a longer period of time.
Home Instead - Caregiver Skills
Safety training on home safety, avoiding injury and falls, preventing strain and pain, safety in the kitchen, cautious cleaning, safe driving, outdoor safety hazards, and disease protection and prevention.
Basic training on emergency situations including stroke, falls and fractures and sudden illness, communication tips including communicating to those with dementia or Alzheimer's, activities for seniors to engage in, mealtime preparations, housekeeping tips, signs of abuse, and tips on reducing caregiver stress.
Advanced training on understanding senior illnesses and conditions, depression in seniors, caregiver stress, in-home exercise for older adults, making mealtime fun, communication tips with the senior, their family, and the caregiver's franchise office.
Activity training including reminiscing activities, modifying activities, activities in facilities, adapting activities for those with impairments, different types of engaging activities for older adults such as gardening, mind builders, and crafts and hobbies, and getting a senior involved in the community in places like senior centers, worship services, volunteering and errands.

Home Instead’s caregivers gave my mom the best care possible. I never had a second thought of my mom being in the best care while they were with her. They went above and beyond to make her safe, comfortable and happy. The caregivers were all professional, caring and on time. The office staff was very accommodating to our many shift changes and requests. I would recommend them to anyone needing this kind of care for their loved one.

Home Instead is expensive but they do a good job. The people they have sent me have generally been very good - some have been outstanding. The agency is responsive to my needs and is always willing to replace an employee that I am unhappy with. My wife is in the end stages of Alzheimer's disease and, in addition to experienced 24 hour caregiver support, she needs compassionate and loving care from the people who look after her. Home Instead have been able to provide this and, for this reason, I have no hesitation in recommending them to others.

Home Instead has provided my loved one with excellent care over the past few years. The carers are always extremely nice & provide my loved one with the care & support that is needed. The carers are always on time, & have created a very enjoyable bond that is much appreciated by myself & their day to day client. Staff is prompt and if there is any issue with staffing the office is excellent at keep you notified.
Staffing changes in hours or special requests were always handled promptly and accommodated.
Our family was fortunate to have the same caregiver for many years and he always went above and beyond. I know my uncle's longevity was due to his diligence and extra care.

Home Instead provides a caregiver for my husband who suffers from minor vascular dementia, incontinence, inability to stand or walk, and to manage ADL on his own.
This caregiver is so unbelievably competent, thorough, knowledgeable, and kind. She always arrives on time, and rarely even takes time off.
Any time I have spoken with anyone at Home Instead, they too are so very competent, knowledgeable, and very responsive.
I have and will continue to recommend this Home Instead office to anyone who is in need. Cannot thank them enough!

Home Instead helped with all daily living tasks. Deborah, my health provider was excellent. When I first got home from being in the hospital for 50 days, I was very weak and needy. I could hardly walk and was overwhelmed returning to my home. I lived independently in my home for 7 years, but this was different because I needed to rely on others.
Deborah was a compassionate and understood what I was going through. She put up with me when I was ornery - always encouraging me that things will get better. As I grew stronger, she allowed me to do more things on my own - which made me feel hopeful.
She watched carefully as OT and PT services were provided. She made sure I had my medications correct and did grocery shopping, drove me to appointments, as well as other matters that required driving.
As time went on and I wanted to do some projects, she worked with me. Her greatest help was helping me cover my dining room chairs.
Deborah is from Nigeria and it was enlightening to share what our lives were like growing up. I learned a lot from her.
I am so grateful that she was the one an only caretaker I had for the 7 months I needed help.
I would encourage anyone looking for home health care support to contact Home Instead.

The personal care for my wife and help with daily chores has been excellent. The caregiver takes a genuine interest in our well being. And the Grandpad is a bonus. Also the follow up by office staff is much appreciated. It is home care with real care from people who truly care.

My Home Instead caregiver is responsible and is always on time (and when unforeseen circumstances do not allow for this, she notifies Home Instead, who promptly calls to let me know what's up, and to ask if I need assistance from them in the meanwhile). She provides experienced and truly competent all-around care.
No request is too small, nor too large - and is only denied on the rare occasion when a request is not within Home Instead policies and practices. My person takes care of my everyday needs - such as preparing meals, cleaning me AND my home, keeping me on my rigorous physical therapy regimen - and my non-everyday needs, as indicated.
We get along so well, offering the companionship so important during this isolated time!

Home Instead, Birmingham has been very professional and attentive to my mother’s needs since July 2018(?). It is necessary sometimes to be patient until a mutual fit happens between caregiver and client. We feel that our mom’s caregiver is like family at this point. She is very kind, knowledgeable, and skilled. She has been wonderful and willing to work more in this past year w/Covid. She makes sure my mom is well cared for, very devoted to her appearance, spirits, and keeping her space clean. We recently moved our mother to Assisted Living and would only consider a place that would allow us to retain caregiver from Home Instead. Also, the nurse has kept good communication w/me and has been making visits or video chats w/GrandPad with my mom. The GrandPad has been a wonderful way to stay in contact and send photos and videos for my mom to enjoy.

I really recommend Home Instead Senior Care to assist with their elderly parents. The caregivers are kind, caring, and willing to help with whatever needs are required. They were readily available for last minute needs and always followed up right away. They answer the phone 24/7 and are very professional. My mom really liked the caregivers and was very happy with the care and assistance.

We are fortunate to have 2 excellent, STRONG women who alternate days/evenings helping us with my husband who has ALS and congestive heart failure. He has no use of arms or legs, is incontinent. I walk with a walker and am not strong enough to move him in bed or transfer him to hoveround. The helpers are willing, intuitive and creative, do not require constant, detailed instructions, provide an atmosphere of caring support. Each has an excellent sense of humor and keeps the ambience light and pleasant. I cannot say enough good about the service offered, or the patience to look for just the right people for our environment.

I am very pleased with all the services that Home Instead Senior Care provides me on a daily basis. These services include general house cleaning, caregiving, making meals. and making sure I take my medication on time. They drive me to appointments and take me grocery shopping.
The staff arrives on time and I really enjoy getting to know the my caregivers. They feel like family. Home Instead has been extremely responsive to any requests I have made and they care about me as an indvidual and follow up on every fall. Based on their recommendaton, I now have care from 8:00 - 3:30 pm Monday - Friday by one caregiver and 8:00 - 5:00 on the weekends as well as daily from 10:00 pm - 8:00 am by various caregivers.

I was very impressed with the professionalism of this agency. I also like their use of the latest technology, which simplified the registration. The caregiver (Rubi) was very patience with my mother. She would rub my mom's back to comfort her. Rubi arrived on time for every visit. I gave her a daily routine checklist and she followed it . Selecting this agency would be an excellent decision.

I have relied on Home Instead services since 2012 & am very impressed. I receive assistance with shopping, bathing, medical appointments, & outings for fun. Home Instead enables me to enjoy life. During the current quarantine the Grandpad tablet that Home Instead Birmingham Michigan provided, allows me to communicate independently, via video calls, to my family, who are located throughout the country. The caregiver, and my tablet, have helped me be more connected to family and friends. I recommend Home Instead Birmingham to anyone who wants to increase their independence & safety, & get more enjoyment out of life!

We use Home Instead for our father and it’s been a true blessing as it has improved his health and overall quality of life. His caregiver Ilene goes above and beyond with managing his home including all of the cooking, cleaning and laundry. She also provides him companionship and keeps him engaged with conversation. She never sits down, she is always on the move getting things done that sometimes we didn’t even realize needed to be done. We are truly grateful for her.

We hired Home Instead to provide caregivers for my brother who had Parkinson's Disease. He lived with our mom who was 90 at the time. Every caregiver was kind, helpful and respectful. They took excellent care of my brother. They were also very helpful to our mom. When my brother ended up in the hospital shortly before he died, the nurses were surprised that he was in such good condition, especially his skin. The agency did a great job making sure that our favorite caregivers came as often as possible. It seemed like the caregivers were also well trained. I always felt confident that my mom and brother were in good hands and safe.

Home Instead has been an invaluable resource for our family. They are extremely responsive to our requests. The caregivers always show up on time.
Becky (nurse) is so attentive and always makes sure she calls me after visiting to let me know if she sees any issues. More than once, she has detected an issue that we would not have been aware of if she wouldn't have been there and we were able to address it with my Mom's physician.
We have been using Home Instead for 1 1/2 years full time for my mother and we do not know what we would do without them.

We have used Home Instead for the past month and the providers, particurlarly Grace M. have been great.
Grace does a great job of taking charge and anticipating needs with my parents. She is very patient with my mother and helps both in terms of light housekeeping, companionship and support during daily activities.

The support of the local office and the caregivers has been outstanding. Alma is the caregiver and she is doing an excellent job for my father. I'm one of four siblings involved, and we literally have no concerns or complaints which is impressive.

Home Instead Senior Care which we have had for both of my parent. They were present when my father passed away and I honestly have never seen more caring individuals in their careworkers. My mother who has aphasia and disabilities from a stroke has needed 24 hour care. What beautiful people we have encountered while using Home Instead, and quite honestly they have become like family. They go above and beyond in their care. They work with you to make sure you are provided with whatever needs you may have for a loved one. They have met any and all of our requests and if we needed to change something have done so almost immediately. They come out to the home to access what type of care is needed, spend time with the person that needs care and take the time to really listen to them, ease any concerns that they may have etc. The owner and his wife have a huge heart for the seniors and the care that they receive, and this also follows through with their entire staff. They made this transition for us very easy and lifted any reservations that we may have had. I would highly recommend Home Instead to anyone looking for care for their loved one.

We are using Home instead. It seems OK. They are doing mostly housework and minimal personal care. I think they are very compassionate, very thoughtful, very caring, and very sensitive to the specific needs of the individual. They respect and maintain their independence where they want to be independent.

Sheila was just fabulous. She offered to do things without me even asking! She even went back home while I was see the doctor to get the flowers I had forgotten to bring to give to the doctor.

Robyn cares for my father, but when mother had a fall this past week, Robyn called me so I could take her to the hospital and have stitches put in. Robyn is very good. She helps with cleaning and is always asking what else she can do.

My mom is using Home Instead. They do a pretty good job. I liked the little extras they do like paint my mom's fingernails and all the other fun things they do for her and they give her someone to talk to.
Some of their employees though aren't just that reliable. But the company itself is really good at replacing someone if that person can't make it that day to care for my mom. It would be nice though to get the same person every week, but right now they have a schedule for 3 different people for 5 days a week and even then some of those people can't make it so they replace them.
