The Story of Southern Cross Home Care

My name is Daphne and I proudly own Southern Cross Home Care. Before I embarked on this glorious journey, I worked for another home care agency. I was not happy with the way caregivers and clients were treated so I decided to start a new adventure. I became an HR director for a nursing home…and LOVED it. After a few months away from this home care agency, I received a call from the husband of a past client who told me since I had left, his wife had been dropped three times. My heart hurt. I loved him and his wife. She had been diagnosed with ALS and I had taken care of her several times. All I could envision was her hitting the tile floor and not being able to catch herself. Her husband asked me to open my own home care company. I was quickly approaching an age where this scared me. I was happy at the nursing home, but I really loved his wife. I talked to my adult children, my parents and friends about this idea. The fear was consuming me, but have I said, “I loved him and his wife?” In one week, I was an LLC, had a business license and was ready to give this beautiful lady the best care ever. The problem was, I was not supposed to care for any client of this past agency until a year’s time was up. Nor hire any of their caregivers, especially not hire their office staff. But…you’ve got it. I loved him and his wife and the court fees were worth knowing Southern Cross Home Care was going to be the best company to care for her.

That was three years ago. And there has been plenty of love shared with all of my clients since. My daughter created our motto, “Let our family care for your family”. We may be a small business, but now I know every client and caregiver are treated with the utmost respect. Because of the way Southern Cross began, it was determined EVERY caregiver would participate in Client Safety training classes as well as Caregiver Safety. Because of our Alzheimer’s training classes, we have become known as the to-go-to home care company to care for those with this debilitating disease. We even provide training for family members in our office at no cost.

My client’s wife has now passed on, I miss her everyday. But I also thank her everyday. Without her, there would not be a Southern Cross Home Care. And without Southern Cross Home Care, I would not have had the opportunity to smile and cry and be touched by so many clients, their families and our excellent caregivers.
