We like Barrington of Oakley. It's very clean and updated with lots of social activities. It seems like they have a really good staff. They know everybody who lives there. The staff who showed us around was very knowledgeable. He's been there a long time. He knows all the residents by name. He knows everything about the facility. The tour was very detailed. They have a full kitchen, an outdoor patio area, and a barbecue firepit, that type of thing.

The Memory care department at Barrington of Oakley LACKS confidence and FAILS to deliver LEADERSHIP / COMMUNICATION / ACCOUNTABILITY / PROFESSIONALISM / COMPASSION AND PROPER TRAINING!! The following is our brief experience at the Barrington. - First of all, YOU WILL HAVE TO BE FULLY INVOLVED EVERYDAY TO ENSURE YOUR LOVED ONE IS RECEVING PROPER CARE! - The GROSS LACK of LEADERSHIP ensures that the daily care plan does not exist! There is no set schedule, each IMPROPERLY TRAINED aide seems to ignore the policy set fourth and tends to be on their own program, at the expense of the residents! - Most Aides are very AGGRESSIVE IN TONE AND BODY LANGUAGE especially when waking residents in the morning. Often times NO toileting upon waking. - Meal time is RUSHED AND LOUD some of the residents often seem agitated. - Most residents will Sit in their chair watching TV (LMN) all day long. - Observed Aides sitting down playing on their cell phones while residents were in NEED OF ASSISTANCE. When asked why they ignore the residents, the aides respond with, “they are having a moment.” However, a properly trained aide would realize there is a problem, and they are not just having a moment! - ACCOUNTABILITY LEAVES MUCH TO BE DESIRED. The night shift is understaffed. Most aides avoid policy and DO NOT check on residents every two hours during the night as promised, lucky if it is every 6 hours. Sometimes NOT at all! When we would be leaving for the night, a couple of aides would say to us “I didn’t know anyone was still here.” - Apartment NOT cleaned daily, bed NOT made, sheets NOT cleaned, DIRTY DISHES accumulate in the sink, TRASH PILES UP FOR DAYS. - DIRTY CLOTHES in hamper for days, damp clothes folded and put back into dresser. Clean sheets were put on bed over a SOILED MATTRESS PAD. - Mom’s fall changed from, “I woke her up in the morning, needed to get gloves came back and found her on the floor to,” “I didn’t see anything.” Policy states that the Dr. is notified when a fall occurs. That did NOT happen. - Our Dad was on a liquid diet. NO SOLID FOOD. His meals consisted of a burrito and a sandwich. We provided the protein shakes, however, he never got them. He couldn’t walk, yet his solid food meals were placed on the kitchen table while he was across the room in his recliner. - DOCUMENTS ARE FULL OF MISTAKES! Shower log annotates showers given on days when our mom was not in the building and on a day when she was sick. - MANAGEMENT IS TOO TOLERANT OF SERIOUS ERRORS! Several times medication had not been administered in the evening hours. One nurse “FORGOT” to give medication two evenings in a row! As well as signing for medication administered daily, when it is only to be giving once every six months. NO ATTENTION TO DETAIL! - Highly recommend installing CAMERAS inside the apartment! Often times the aides would BLOCK or UNPLUG the cameras. This behavior naturally begs the question, what are you doing or NOT doing that you don’t want the family members to see? - LACK OF COMPASSION, Day after our dad died, we were there comforting our mom and the nurse demanded that we leave. She RUDELY escorted us out of the building on the orders of the Memory Care Director. This is the same nurse that FORGOT to give our mom her pain medication two days in a row! - To resolve any problems you must COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN! We had three meetings with the Executive Director and the Memory Care Director all to no avail! - Clearly the Barrington’s memory care staff is more concerned about their own well-being and NOT the residents! LACK OF LEADERSHIP and IMPROPERLY TRAINED AIDES have produced a very caustic and corrosive environment for the residents. WHAT A SHAME!

I loved everything about Barrington of Oakley, it was just more expensive as far as being able to afford it. If I had a choice, that's where my dad would be going because it was going to be super convenient, but the price was out of his range. The staff was wonderful and very helpful. We even played a game while we were there. We joined in and they were very nice. The place was also gorgeous.

Barrington of Oakley was a very nice community. It was a newer facility. However, it was a little further away from where my mom was, and it was more expensive. It was a single building with 4 wings where the rooms were. It was very nice spacious room. The facility was beautiful. It had a very elegant dining room. They had a movie theater room. They had great facilities for therapy and workout. They had a pool.

The facility is in good updated condition. But food service is quite lacking. They are always running out of items like jelly, butter, eggs, etc. Forget it if you need your meal taken to your apartment. They insist much of the problems with food is not pre-ordering from a menu, not letting them know if guests will be present, etc. Well most of the time you do all this and still they have no record of you, no pre-ordered food. The dining room manager is nasty, very hot and cold. Don't dare question anything about the food or service. Servers are inexperienced, never refill drinks. Clueless about waiting on people in a timely manner. Servings are miniscule but I guess they figure elderly don't eat much. Continued emails and phone calls to the executive director get promises of fixing things, but rarely does that happen. He doesn't seem to be in touch with what his staff is up to. A housekeeper was let go in November 2015 and another told my mother they'd clean her apartment when they hired someone. Good customer service skills, NOT. I was assured by the director this is not so, they clean weekly regardless. Well her place hasn't been cleaned in over two weeks. The marketing hype going with promoting the facility as top notch would be wonderful if it were all true. There is little follow up and residents are resigned to mediocre service and attitudes. For nearly $4,000 a month, this is not a good value for my mother. She moved there two years ago at $3500. At the time told they hadn't raised rent in five years, and if they did it would be 2-3%. The following year it went up to $3750. In 2016 it'll go up to $3932. In my estimation that's 7 or 8%, not 2-3.

I visited another one named Barrington of Oakley. I would give it a 5 on everything that I saw. It is an excellent facility, but the only reason I might prefer the other facility was that it was smaller. I think that may be easier for a memory person to adjust. As for the staff, I can't really tell other than everybody that I met was pleasant. I don't know how efficient they are because I was only there for a short time. I was impressed with what I saw for a two hour visit. They have a lovely and nice dining room. The rooms are beautiful. They are spotless but almost too big. They have happy hour, and they have music. Their program looks at the skill level of the person, and they have activities that are appropriate. Everybody can't do the same activity because they are not able to.
