As much as I liked Oaks at Pooler, it was at the high end of our price range. It was very clean. The studio was a nice size for my brother-in-law, and it's in a good location. It's only like 40 minutes for us to get there, and only about 35 to 40 minutes for him to get to the nearest VA Hospital. Location was important. The building looked very nice. They had a dining room and you could have a private family affair there. The staff was very friendly and greeted us.

The entire staff at Oaks is amazing. They truly care about the residents there, and provide excellent care and assistance when needed. In addition to fun activities, good food, and pretty surroundings, they offer opportunities for spiritual growth and support.

We had my mom at the Oaks at Pooler, and they just don’t have the trained personnel. They don’t know what to do with people with memory care problems. If you try to make my mom do something she doesn’t want to do, she’ll fight you. If you don’t go and leave her alone, she’ll get you. Trying to get her to take a bath, she had problems with that, and they didn’t know how to handle it. The price is based on care, and it gets very expensive; level one is cheaper, and it was $4300 a month, and level 2 was $4985. It’s a beautiful place. It’s brand new, gorgeous, and looked like a resort, but the people aren’t trained to work with memory care people. If you just need assisted living and can afford it, it’s beautiful. Every time we went in there, the workers were all sitting around in the lunch room. They weren’t working and helping the patients. I don’t recommend it to anybody with memory care.

Oaks at Pooler was nice but more expensive than other communities. The staff member was very nice and very informative. She talked to us about all the amenities and the services they offered. They had different types of rooms. I saw where residents put together crossword puzzles and their dining area. However, I think everybody was taking a nap at that time.

Oaks at Pooler was a great, good-sized place that was only a year old. It wasn't huge and felt a little more personable. It had more of a clinical and industrial type of feel and was not quite homey. They had common rooms and a full calendar of activities every day. The community relations director was the only person we interacted with.
