Anthem Lakes was nice. The grounds were very nice. They had a very extensive walking path. The gym was limited though. It was kind of a physical therapy thing where they had a physical therapy staff there. We saw a two-bedroom apartment, but it was kind of small. They also got studios, one-bedrooms, and a one-bedroom with a den. They had a small porch, but there's barely room for a couple of chairs. They have a proper dining room and an activity room.
My mom moved into Anthem Lakes. I like the service. The staff is very friendly. There's a nurse there 24 hours a day. It's just a great facility. I'm very pleased with it. The food is excellent. They have a well-balanced, three-course meal served there. They have activities going all day, every day. They have bingo, crafts, trivia, football game parties, a little happy hour on Fridays, and social events. They have events where they bus the residents twice a week off campus to the store or to physician appointments.
We are staying here at Anthem Lakes assisted living, but I am looking for something that's a little bit less expensive that still provides the same services. I like the place because it's close to the church that we go to, it's almost walking distance, and it's close to the Navy Exchange. I'm a retired navy and shop there for what we need. It's also not too far from my house. However, I'm a retired navy and government employee, and all my pension just goes into this place. My wife sleeps in the bedroom. There's a living room next to it, and that's where I sleep.
They have all kinds of activities here, and the rooms are good. They have an exercise room, which I use a lot. My wife is really the one that needs the care. I'm just staying with her because sometimes, especially at night, they only have two or three caregivers for the whole building. My wife would need to go to the bathroom constantly, in the middle of the night, because she has a hyperactive bladder. If I am not here, nobody would take her to the bathroom. Sometimes I give her the shower myself and attend to her clothes and dress her in the nightgown to go to sleep. They do that here, that's one of their amenities, but they are just sort of short-staffed during the night, and sometimes even during the day. The staff is very respectful and patient, but just short-handed. If three or four patients are needing help at the same time, and there's only one person who's taking care of them, it would be impossible to take care of all of them at the same time.
The amenities are outstanding. They have a beauty salon, a library, and a bar. Next to the dining room, there is a big patio that is open. When my sister and her husband came over to visit, they accommodated us over there. My sister brought their own food and they were able to eat at the big table there. They call that place the sunroom.
I toured Anthem Lakes. All the staff were willing to talk to us when we toured. It was clean. It didn't smell like a nursing home, and everybody was out and about. They just had a flower arranging class when we were going through there. They do painting. They have a hair salon. They have a chapel. They have a little library with computers. They have a whole big outdoor area. I talked to the chef. The dining room was clean, well lit, spacious, and had different areas where you could sit next to a window. It felt homey.
Anthem Lakes is very nice and very clean. The staff is so nice. They make me feel really comfortable being able to take my mother-in-law there. They have single rooms, double rooms, and efficiency apartments with a stove and stuff like that in it. She is in a double room. In the double rooms, you have a room with one person there, then you have another room with a second person, and then you have a common area for both of them to go and sit if they want to watch TV, talk, play cards, or anything, and then they have a bathroom that they share. Twice a week, they have a social get-together where they all go down into a dining/bar area and sit, talk, play, or anything like that. Once COVID is under control, they will be having outings once a week. They also have a classroom where they can do crafts and puzzles, they have a library, and they have bingo. The staff is very knowledgeable. They're not too slow to call me, and they ask what my opinion would be. Everybody I have talked to there is very knowledgeable about everything that is going on there.
I could no longer take care of my mother-in-law, so when we took her in there, it was something that had to be done, and they were very helpful about getting everything taken care of for her and getting her in there in a timely manner. My mother-in-law also said that everything that she had eaten so far has been very good. She has not had a problem, had to send anything back, or tell them that she did not care for anything, and the meals that come to them are nice-sized meals. The place is also very reasonably priced.
