I like my tour at Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden, and I like everything about it. I like the fact that when I walked in there, I didn't see anybody sitting around, which was one of the things I was hesitant about. The lady was very thorough. I love that place, but it just costs too much money. It was just too much and they would nickel-and-dime you to death, while at the other place I toured everything is included. So it would have cost way more than what they said it was going to be monthly. Everything was exactly what I wanted, but it was just too much money, that was the bottom line. And that was just at level one, my cousin has Alzheimer's so it's going to get worse. So it was expensive at level one, I would hate to see what is level three. They had exercises, cooking classes, and they go out now and then supervised. They have a place to go out in the back, they have cookouts, they have a courtyard and a salon. The rooms were a pretty good size. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the facility, and my nose is keen.

My mother has been in Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden for 9 days now. We chose it for her because she can be on her own there and still have lots of help and 24-hour care. It's very easily accessible for wheelchairs and walkers. There are lots of wonderful activities every day. There's also wonderful food. She's only been there nine days and she talks about how great the meals are. She's in their assisted living. They have guests that play music with piano and a trumpet. They have arts and crafts. They have rides when you want to go shopping. They have a bus and take them on outings.

I toured Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden for my mom. It has a dining room on each floor, and I remember it's four stories. They have snack rooms and a wet bar for wine and beer. They run that once in a while. There is a separate section for memory care on the third floor. And it was really beautiful. I looked at both sections here. The staff was very professional, informative, helpful, and very pleasant. They sit and listen to your concerns. You can ask them any question, and they'll answer happily. They do everything they can to set your mind at ease. The head chef had brought down an apple pie for us when we were leaving, so we brought home an apple pie. They have everything you can think of. They have exercise rooms, a library, and entertainment rooms. They have small diners where you can go and get coffee. A drink is available any time with a snack, and you just help yourself. They gave me an apple pie, and I like a lot of cinnamon and nutmeg and ginger in it. It was a little bit bland and undercooked, but it was good enough. It's still a good dessert.

We went to Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden. That one seemed absolutely wonderful. I actually had started a contract with them, and gave them a deposit. But the next day they called me, they did a little evaluation, and they didn't tell me that day, but they waited 'til the next day to tell me that the level of care that they felt my dad needed, and they upped the price $1,400, and I couldn't afford it. They said that when he first went in, that first two weeks (even though he was quarantined), that there's somebody who was going to take him and make sure he was doing things, and even take him outside and get him outside. That place was more willing to take care of him those first few weeks when nobody could be around.

Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden was lovely. The staff was awesome and the people seemed very happy. It was shiny, new, and it had interesting things to do and look at. I would have loved it if my mother could have gone there, but we couldn't afford it. The rooms were very nice and the dining area was beautiful. They have a pub where they do happy hour, play games, and they have a wall of heroes. They have a lot of veterans that live there. They also have off-site outings to movies and museums, and things at the beach.

I went to Benchmark, and they were extremely helpful. They told me right up-front that they weren’t going to be able to meet my mother’s needs. Then they spent another hour helping me understand Medicaid, funding sources, and VA assistance; which I wouldn’t have looked into if they hadn’t mentioned it. It looked very clean, and I would definitely have considered them if they could have met my mother’s needs; but they couldn’t. It makes a difference to me that they were upfront about it. They were very good with the residents, and seemed to know the people in the area that they were in. They knew a lot about the activities.

The employees at Benchmark are very great and helpful. The community is very good. It is clean and presentable. The food seems to be good. The rooms are very good. My mom doesn't take advantage of the activities just yet, but they have a lot of good variety, and from what I have seen, they are good. We chose it because mom seems to like it more than any other.

This was my top pick - The memory care unit was awesome, right from the staff, to the rooms and to the programs that they offered there. I visited 4 over a 2-day span and this was it; however, they did not accept Medicaid after the money was spent and I didn't want to move my relative after a short time. If I had the money - then YES - hands down - no one else that I visited compared!!!

I chose Maple Woods for my father because it had a Dementia Unit. They have a whole lot of programs going on. They have certain activities that they do in different orders to help maintain their minds as much as they can. They also have different kinds of activities during the day. I just noticed that the management has a high turnover rate although the Director of the Dementia Care Unit is still the same person. He has been there for seven years and that was one of the things that I looked at; stability. The rest of the staff has been the same people ever since we visited the place and we also like their food.

My mom is doing much, much better at Maple Woods. She has adapted very well. The staff is very friendly. However, the food could be improved.

My grandmother stayed at this facility after her stroke. The facility is beautiful and therr are many amenities for the elderly. Their is a big living area for all the elderly to gather and socialize or watch t.v. The facility was kept clean and everyone was very calm and relaxed. Seemed like it was a nice quiet place for anyone to live in. However, the staff was a bit rude. You are not greeted as soon as you come in. You have to go out of your way to look for the staff and they seemed bothered if you asked them for anything. There were no bilingual staff members which made it difficult for my grandmotherwho only speaks Spanish to understand them. My grandmother was unable to speak for a while after he stroke and tried communicating by hand gestures but the staff didn't understand her and she didn't understand them. Plenty of times I came to her and she had not been changed or fed. It was very upsetting when the staff answered that they didn't know what she wanted so they basically ignored her. Overall the place looks nice but the staff needs to work on their skills. Be friendlier and they need to hire people who can communicate with the elderly living there.

I have had a generally positive experience with this facility. My grandmother lived there recently after living alone for several years. The staff was very welcoming and made sure that she and the family were aware with the variety of services the facility had to offer. When my grandmother needs help, they are quick to respond and always provide an adequate level of service in order to meet her needs and ensure her safety. Several activities are available to residents, and the food is good. My biggest complaint is the extra cost associated with several of the tasks that one would consider to be a part of the rent (e.g. escorting to the dining room, medication reminders, etc.) The rent is quite expensive.
