About This Community
Maryland Gardens Dementia Behavioral Health Assisted Living facility provides a secured setting for individuals that require low to moderate support for dementia and psychiatric care. Utilizing the beautiful Arizona climate, Maryland Gardens campus is set up with a combined indoor/outdoor setting. Staff is equipped to handle residents who require a secured setting for added safety and security to prevent wandering or elopement type behaviors. Psychiatric and Medical providers come to the facility on a weekly basis to manage and evaluate residents on a consistent basis. The staff is also supported by a Behavioral Health Clinical Director to provide individualized care plans and interventions and trainings specific to each resident.
Maryland Gardens Dementia Behavioral Program is designed for residents with a combination of dementia and a psychiatric diagnosis. Caregivers are trained in handling the behaviors and symptoms that accompany such diagnosis such as: wandering, pacing, refusing or combativeness with care, verbally abusive, disruptive to others, sexually inappropriate or difficulty with redirection.

Placing your loved one at Maryland Gardens is a difficult decision. Often, it is the only choice for a person with behavior issues that are inappropriate for traditional assisted living homes. Given that this may be a 'placement of last resort' it could be hard to trust the community's promises of quality care and rehabilitation. They are working with residents who are unwelcome virtually anywhere else and are unsafe to live independently.
Yet, Maryland Gardens consistently receives awards for excellence in care. Their staff doesn't just 'do what they can' the do what is best. On a recent visit I was able to observe the staff interaction, learn about the programming and therapy and was surprised to learn that not all residents are permanent. Once the behavior problem as been resolved, he or she can return to their previous living environment or one that is appropriate for their needs.
Those who are apprehensive about having their loved one in a community such as this should feel at ease knowing they are receiving a tailor made program designed to improve the behavior or problem and their loved one will receive excellent care during their stay.

I toured this particular facility when attempting to select a care facility for my father-in-law. My family wasn't impressed with the accomdations offered and thought that the home lacked a comfortable and inviting feel.
On a positive note, we were impressed by the warm welcoming of the employees and the activity program offered. Note, that we did not select this home as my father-in-law's residence so we have not experience the quality of care given here.
